After the Wofford Terriers tied the score with a touchdown and two-point conversion, the Chattanooga Mocs were able to answer with a game-winning drive in the final two-plus minutes of the game. Today's winner was on a 38-yard field goal from junior
Henrique Ribeiro for a 20-17 win.Â
Â
"Great win," head coach
Russ Huesman said. "I had confidence Henrique was going to make that. I actually was not nervous. I felt good. Henrique has got a lot of confidence. It was an unbelievable job by him. There was great protection on that thing. They knew we could not have any leakage.
Â
The Mocs (6-1, 4-0 in the SoCon), started the drive on their own 20-yard line with 2:25 remaining in the game.Â
Â
During that time span, the offense advanced the ball to Wofford's 47-yard line, but faced a daunting, fourth-and-two ahead of them.Â
Â
After a quick timeout by Coach Huesman, the Mocs decided to go for it.Â
Â
Senior quarterback
Jacob Huesman took the snap and pitched it to junior running back
Derrick Craine for a 16-yard pick up and a first down.Â
Â
"We knew it was going to Craine and I'm glad coach (Huesman) believed in us to say that it was in our hands to go and get that first down," said Huesman, who finished the game 15-for-23 with 109 yards passing and 58 yards rushing with a touchdown. "It was well-blocked, well-executed and the wide receivers on the outside did a fantastic job. They did a great job on the perimeter which gave us more than enough for that first down to put us in great position.Â
Â
"That play doesn't necessarily have to get us a score, but it needed to get us comfortable enough to put us in to field goal range. We lined it put pretty nicely for the field goal."Â
Â
As time winded down, Coach Huesman called timeout with four seconds remaining in the game to send out the field goal unit.Â
Â
Wofford answered with a timeout of their own to ice Ribeiro, but the junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, stayed calm, cool and collected and kicked it straight through the uprights as time expired.Â
Â
"I just knew that I had to make it," Ribeiro said. "I had to take my chance because I knew this was going to be the one. We haven't won here in 18 years and the offense and defense really helped put me in the position to put points on the board."Â
Â
"Every week, we practice the two-minute drill, and my teammates told me that I got it and that they had no doubt in their minds I was going to make it."
Â
As the ball sailed through the uprights, the team ran to the field to congratulate Ribeiro and celebrated their road win.Â
Â
"We knew he could make it," Huesman said. "We've seen him do it all the time, and he was due one of these. I don't think he's hit a game-winner in his career here, but we never doubted him. We were well in his range, and we felt very confident in him. We just told him to go out there like he does in practice, visualize the kick and put it right through."Â
Â
With Ribeiro's field goal, the Mocs stay undefeated in the conference and return home next Saturday, Oct. 31, for their Homecoming game against Western Carolina. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Finley Stadium.
