Head coach Jim FosterInitial thoughts."I thought we moved the ball fairly well. I liked our zone for stretches of time. I think it slowed them down. We got nice contributions from
Queen Alford and
Moses Johnson off the bench. We've asked
Keiana Gilbert to be more aggressive and she was with very good results."
On today's line up."We put Keiana at point. We had some people playing different positions to get some experience. We probably didn't have that line up practice together all year, so they got out there in the game."
"You want to give people playing time. You want to get people ready for an opportunity down the road when you need them and we want to develop some depth of different positions. Keiana has the ability to play a little bit of point when at a two guard offense, so we just put her out there and let her do it."
On two day turn around."That's the league. We play a game. We have a day to prepare, and then we play a game. So all that is, is preparation for what we normally do. So it's good that way."
Did this win get you all off on the right foot?"At the end of the season last year McNeese State played a tournament against Furman and beat them 87-70, and Furman's a pretty good basketball team. My eyes were opened by that score. I thought we did a pretty good job defensively on them. When you play teams that are used to winning, they're going to keep playing."
Jasmine Joyner, junior, forwardWhat made the difference to take a bigger lead in the game?"I think it's patience. We had to figure out where the opening was at. We realized there was opening in the second half. Basically we got smarter and played a little slower."
On playing with four quarters."It went really quick to be honest. It's really fast, so we're adjusting to it. I think the scrimmages helped us a lot to adjust to the four quarters."
What needs to get better?"We have to tighten up our defense. I feel like we let them shoot too many three's. We have to get back tight on that. We have to reverse the ball and drive more. I feel like we could have got in the lane more often. But mostly we just need to tight up our defense."
On having a lot of players back in the lineup."It felt good, especially with
Aryanna Gilbert. She's one of the guards that can pass me on the post play. She knows how I like it. It felt really good to be out there with her.
Queen Alford's aggressiveness out there, she's going to be one of the key players. She's a very smart player as well. She just has to adjust coming back since she hasn't played for a year. She's getting her groove back into it."
Â
Keiana Gilbert, sophomore, guard/forwardDid you feel more comfortable coming into this year?"Yes, I think my freshman year, I was kind of nervous. This year I felt more comfortable playing on the court."
How important is a strong start?"It's important to start off like this so we know what we need to work on, and what we did good we can carry the moment on to the next games."
Are you all just focusing on next game or setting sights on Indiana?"We just focus on the next game and prepare for that one. And whenever we're done with that one, we prepare for the next game."
