Chattanooga Basketball Postgame Quotes
Chattanooga at Stanford
Maples Pavilion - Palo Alto, Calif.
Monday – Dec. 28, 2015Head Coach Jim FosterOpening thoughts on the game:"A lot of things. I can't tell you the amount of times that we talk about, when you take the ball into the lane against good teams, you are not going to get layups. We never work on the 7-8-foot jump shots because that is not a high-percentage shot. If you are going to get into the lane, you want to get about 12, 13, 14-feet out from the basket where they have to came away. Maybe now you have a chance to go by, but when you are playing teams with that much size, there is always going to be someone there to answer you. I think that they blocked seven of those shots today. But we kept going there.Â
"This is a process. This is something we talk about constantly, on a daily basis. Comprehending when you play against teams like this, the mindset is Connecticut, Stanford, Notre Dame. That is why we are telling these players what to do and what will work against them.Â
"Hopefully, reality sets in. They are always going to be big. The schedule we play, we are always going to play against people like this. There are ways to play against this and there are answers. You've got to want to be coached. We've got to want to compete at that level and the framework of our skills. That's why you play people like this."
On seeing those things work in small spurts in the game:"It is a matter of growing. Last year against this team, I think Chelsea made five threes. Chelsea is not here. Keiana wants to please. We need her to shoot and we need her to be aggressive. She took strides in that direction today. Now, how you do refine that and how do you develop that so you can be successful against teams like this.Â
"She got 16 shots off. You make two and of the 16, maybe eight or nine of the level to too deep. In high school, she could jump over people. She is not playing against a team that has all 6-3 and 6-4. "
"I thought we competed a little bit better in the second half, in terms of our defense. Offensively, we have one point guard. Red is the point guard. The other is out for the season. She's got to be in there all of the time. She can't take time off and she is understanding that. She is in her fourth year, but she has always had other people that could catch a break. It is time for her to make that next step. All across the country, there are teams with only one point guard taking that responsibility.Â
"I told them, we are not changing the way we are playing. We are not taking a step back. We are not playing the 10
th or 11
th place team in the league. You look up at the wall and you see that this team has won Pac-10, Pac-12 championships. They are used to winning and they are very good at home.Â
"We need to step up to that and become that. You need to try. You walk into the gym the next day, and hopefully you are coming in wanting to be coached. Coming in with the reality that you have to get better."
"Everything we would like to accomplish is still in front of us. We have not played a league game, but the mindset has to be different." Â
