Head Coach Russ HuesmanÂ
Opening Statement:"We're excited to win a football game. We are excited - we got a win. But we can't continue to play like that - we cannot play defense and continue to give up big plays. We just can't do it. We're gonna get it fixed, but we didn't compete defensively. Thank goodness the offense carried us today. (We) appreciate them."
Â
On halftime speech:"I just said they gotta play better in the second half. There wasn't anything specific - there wasn't any magic to it. They knew they had to play (better)."
Â
On Derrick Craine:"He played hard. I'll tell you, the kid plays hard. He's a great kid, I'm proud of him, and thank goodness we've got him."
Â
On the offense:"Give our offense credit, I mean, they did a really nice job. Offensively, we played good. We converted some key third-down plays. We kept drives alive."
Â
"We took some shots - some deep shots - and got the one that was huge that got us out of our (own) endzone. That was a big throw and catch."
Â
"We protected (the quarterback) well today. We got first downs when we needed to, we scored touchdowns when we needed to, so (I'm) proud of the way the offense was (playing) today."
Â
On Mars Hill:"Give Mars Hill credit, now. They got after us.. They had some playmakers on the field. They had a well thought-out gameplan to take advantage of us."
Â
Jacob Huesman On Mars Hill…"Those guys came to play. They really did. That's a tough football team. Regardless of what the impression was coming in. A win is a win. If we score more points than them, at the end of the day we should be pretty happy."
Â
On receivers today…"As a whole those guys played really well today. They blocked well on the perimeter; gave us some chances out there. When the time came to catch the ball, they did that too. I'm proud of those guys."
Â
On running the football a little bit less this year…"I think coming into this game it was kind of structured that way. Not necessarily a week off from running the ball, but kind of as needed. None of that really bothers me. If I get thirty carries in a game and we win I'm happy. If I get zero carries in a game and we win I'm happy. It's all about the team; all about putting a win in the win column."
Â
Nakevion LeslieOn today's defense…"We're not going to be happy. We won the game. A win's a win, but defensively I would say we played poorly. That's not how we play. We're capable of playing a much better defense than what we were showing today".
Â
On gap integrity…"It's just about being aggressive, being where we're supposed to be, keeping our eyes in the right spot and making the plays we're supposed to make. Just being physical and competing no matter who it is we're going against."
Â
What was the main focus the week leading up to this game?"Doing everything right and executing. Last week against Jacksonville state we played well with effort and enthusiasm but our execution wasn't were it needed to be. Coming out again this game, we were running around but our execution still wasn't where it needed to be. We have to go back to practice, find it and do better."
Â
Mars Hill Head Coach Tim Clifton Thoughts on overall game…"I thought our kids played extremely hard. I thought we continued to fight. I'm proud of them. I think the blocked extra point gave them (UTC) a little more momentum. I'm proud of my kids."Â
Â
Who on the team were you specifically impressed with today?"I thought there were different guys that played good. Keshaun Taylor had a great game. Our quarterback did a good job of executing. Overall our defense had one heck of a battle. They just kept fighting. I think we grew as a team today."
Â
How big was it to attack early?"That gives you confidence. Anytime you can get something going early, I think it gives you a lot of confidence. All you try to do against somebody like this, 1AA, is you try to be in the game in the fourth quarter. Then you have to give yourself a chance to win and we did that today."
