Chattanooga Mocs senior
Dee Oldham has taken a special path to the Scenic City. It's one that would impress famed poet Robert Frost.
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. Those immortal words written by Frost in 1916 were not necessarily meant for the basketball court, but they fit Oldham to a tee.
He started out his collegiate career at UT Martin, signing and playing his first two years for Jason James. In 2014, the Skyhawks made a coaching change opting for UNLV assistant Heath Schroyer. Dee played a semester under his new head coach, but decided to transfer.
During the holiday break, he settled on Chattanooga. He spent the spring semester practicing with the team and working with Will Wade and his staff. In April, another change as Wade accepted the same role at VCU.
Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics
David Blackburn brought
Matt McCall on board. That makes four coaches in four years for Oldham.
"It's something that every athlete doesn't experience...it's against the norm," Oldham shared. "I look at it as a positive. Out of all the four coaches I've had, every one of them brings something different to the table. You can take pieces of each one and mold it together and make something positive out of it, something beneficial."
If playing word association, the one word that comes to mind for
Dee Oldham is "competitiveness". Oldham is one of the most out-going, positive people on the squad. Get him between the lines…he works to win. Even in drills, workouts or shooting contests before and after practice, he works to win.
"He's competitive," coach
Matt McCall noted. "I'd say competitive and versatile. We can play him at multiple spots. He can play the 1, 2 or 3, and I think you can play him in the frontcourt in a pinch.
"That's because he has unbelievable basketball feel."
Since Dee played the fall semester of the 2014-15 season, by NCAA transfer rules, he burned an entire year of eligibility. He also is unavailable to play until after finals, so the first time Mocs fans get the opportunity to see him play is Dec. 8 against Tennessee Wesleyan.
We think it will be worth the wait.
