University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore Sydney Patton led the Mocs on the opening day of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic. She advanced to the finals of the Patricia Morgan Draw with two singles wins in Tuscaloosa, Ala., today.
Patton opened by advancing past UAB's Catherine Ragon. Patton dropped the first set and was tied 1-1 when Ragon had to retire due to an injury. Patton then scored an impressive (7-5, 6-2) over Tulane's Sofia Kurtz. She is set to face Troy's Hannah Seizer in tomorrow's finals.
Sophomore Delaney Edwards split her matches in the Leslie Grossman Draw and will compete for third place tomorrow. She defeated Mercer's Marie Mottet (7-6, 6-4) in straight sets before retiring in her match against UAB's Marlene Herrmann (5-2, ret.).
Edwards and Patton teamed up for a doubles win in the Nancy Harris Draw. They defeated Troy's Ohta and Herlina (8-6). Down 5-2, they rallied for a nice victory.
Sophomore Caroline Hall had one of the biggest wins of the day. She beat Alabama's Juliana Valero (6-3, 6-2) in the opening round of the Jenny Ketchum Draw. She lost in the semis to Clemson's Ally Miller-Krasilnikov (6-4, 6-1) and will compete for third place tomorrow.
Hall and sophomore Mckenzie Barco lost their lone doubles match and Barco also lost in singles.
"It was a good day," said head coach Chad Camper. "Caroline had a huge win over Alabama. She really stuck to her game plan, showed some mental toughness and executed.
"Delaney played really well in doubles and Sydney had a big win in singles to advance to the finals. Mckenzie had a tough loss in three sets, but she is really playing her best tennis of the fall. We are excited about tomorrow. It has been a good tournament so far, but we need to finish strong."
