Chattanooga vs. Mercer
Southern Conference Tournament
Asheville, N.C. - U.S. Cellular Center
Sunday - March 6, 2016
Chattanooga MocsCoach Jim FosterOn Mercer's second-half run"They're a very good team. They're very well coached. They were going to make a run. Good teams do that. They don't quit. They threw a wrinkle at us and we were a little frazzled for a second, but once we got our heads about us, they were giving us opportunities. With what they were doing defensively, we just had to make a few extra passes. We were trying to make one pass and make something happen. When people do that to you, if you make three or four passes, you're going to get a quality shot. Once we figured that out, we took care of our business."
Â
On the defensive effort on KeKe Calloway"We knew we had to guard her and made some adjustments. That took care of that. Her last 3 was a scramble. A lot of people were out of position and she just hung out behind the 3-point line. She's fortunate they got the ball because if we got the ball, there was nobody back defensively. So it was just one of those freaky things. We adjusted to her, and I think we did a much better job in the second half than we did in the first."
Â
On UTC's improved 3-point shooting"We have sneakily become a good 3-point shooting team. If you were to look at our 3-point shooting stats from that little blip we had in the middle of our conference season, you would see that they're significantly better than if you just looked at the overall stats. We have consciously worked on that. We have a drill that we used called '55,' and we've gotten better as a result of that drill, mindset and tweaking people's techniques. We made some suggestions, one of the suggestions being that we cut practice back. We don't practice as much, but I want them to still shoot. I want them to come in and get shots up or go to the arena and get shots up. Keiana and
Aryanna Gilbert come in early every day to catch up with the sister stuff. They chat but they shoot a lot. They're both shooting the ball better. Red (
Alicia Payne) grabs a coach early or late because of her busy schedule as a senior. Coaches rebound for her. I think a lot of hard work has made us a better 3-point shooting team."
Â
Chattanooga senior guard Alicia PayneOn winning her fourth SoCon title and wearing the net around her neck for the first time"This is the first time I've gotten it. It feels good just to win with my team. After all the stuff we have been through this year, off the court and on the court, it means a whole lot."
Â
Chattanooga sophomore guard Keiana Gilbert"I think the confidence I have now is a huge reason that I make most of my shots now. That's what I lacked towards the beginning of the season, because I didn't shoot the ball as much. I think now that I have confidence, I am more confident in taking certain shots and thinking they will go in."
