ABBOTSFORD, B.C. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior
Keiana Gilbert (Pulaski, Tenn.) hit a jumper with 58 seconds to play as the Mocs retook the lead to edge University of the Fraser Valley 74-71 at the Envision Athletic Centre Sunday evening.
Â
Gilbert led the Mocs with 15 points on 7-of-14 from the field and one 3-pointer. She added four rebounds and five assists while playing 37 minutes and was the only UTC player in double figures.
Â
Senior
Aryanna Gilbert (Pulaski, Tenn.) and freshmen
Jacobi Lynn (Tellico Plains, Tenn.) and
Brooke Burns (Gadsden, Ala.) each added nine points for the Mocs while sophomore
Nakeia Burks (Huntsville, Ala.) had eight.
Â
Sophomore
Arianne Whitaker (Cincinnati, Ohio) had seven points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots in 16 minutes of play.
Â
The Mocs were 27-of-65 (45.1%) for the game. The first quarter saw the Mocs make 50 percent (9-18) and the 52.9 percent (9-17) in the third. UTC edged the Cascades on the boards 38-37 and dished out 18 assists with 15 miscues.
Â
UTC led by as much as 10 points in the second quarter before seeing that lead disappear to just one point, 32-31, at the half. Chattanooga built its lead back to five points by the end of the third, 54-49, but that would dwindle away with UFV taking over with 5:40 to play in the game. That lead would get to as much as 67-62 with 4:39 remaining.
Â
The Mocs tied it up with a 3-pointer from Burns and a jumper from freshman
Mya Long (Chattanooga, Tenn.) whose steal led to the fastbreak score.
Â
The Cascades got back out front by four, 71-67 with 2:55 to go, but that would be all for UFV the rest of the way. Chattanooga scored seven straight to close it out.
Â
The Mocs won all three games on their Canada Tour and will return home Tuesday night.
