2012 U.S. Amateur: Cause & Effect

Steven Fox's 2012 United States Amateur Championship had an immediate effect on his playing career, as well as a long-standing boost to the program.

It's been five years since Fox's epic win on August 18, 2012. A lot has happened since then, but the impact is still there on the program.

"It's huge for the program," Guhne said. "Still in recruiting now, I know there's not a recruit that I've wanted at Chattanooga that we haven't talked about Steven Fox winning the U.S. Amateur. Parents or coaches will come up to me in recruiting and ask about Fox.

"Players win championships, coaches never hit a shot. It does give us a lot of clout with people thinking we helped him get there, but at the end of the day, he did it all. I tell them they're the only ones that can make themselves great, and he did a great job of it."

The immediate effect was enormous to Fox's career. It led to him play a veritable who's who of bucket list golf courses.

He won at iconic Cherry Hills. That earned berths in the Masters, U.S. Open and British Open marking off Augusta National, Merion and Muirfield.

Fox received several sponsor exemptions into PGA Tour fields. He played Pebble Beach, Bay Hill and Torrey Pines along with Muirfield Village and others. He's truly been where only the select have gone before.

"There's no way to describe it," Fox shared. "An amateur playing in those events, it's a dream. I wasn't ready for any of it.

"The three majors I played, and I played about seven other tour events. Events I got to play because of the Am included Torrey Pines, Jack's tournament at Muirfield Village, Bay Hill, here in Tennessee at the FedEx, the Colonial...that's a dream and I got to live it. It was awesome being a part of that."

Today, Fox keeps working. He's the leading money winner on the Adams Pro Tour grinding his way back to the Web.com Tour where he can earn his PGA Tour Card as former teammate Stephan Jaeger '12 did this year.
