Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football student-athlete Terrell Owens was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame today. The official announcement takes place during the NFL Honors Awards show on NBC, Saturday night. Owens was a three-sport athlete for the Mocs and a member of the football team from 1992-95.
He spent 15 seasons in the NFL and was a six-time Pro Bowl selection and a five-time All-Pro pick. He is second to Jerry Rice in career receiving yards with 15,934, third all-time in receiving touchdowns behind Rice and Randy Moss (153) and eighth all-time in receptions (1,078).
"We are very excited for him," stated UTC head football coach
Tom Arth. "He is an incredible ambassador for our football program and the University and we could not be more proud of him. We are thrilled to celebrate his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame."
Not only is Owens the only player to score a touchdown against all 32 NFL teams, he has at least two scores against every team. He played for the 49ers (1996-03), Eagles (2004-05), Cowboys (2006-08), Bills (2009) and Bengals (2010), and is the only player in NFL history to have an 800-yard receiving season with five different teams.
"All Mocs fans know that TO is special and he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame," stated UTC Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics
Mark Wharton. "We are all extremely proud of him and his accomplishments. We congratulate him now and look forward to celebrating further the next time he is on campus."
During his time at Chattanooga, he had 144 catches for 2,320 yards and 19 touchdowns. He is second all-time in career receiving yards and third in receiving touchdowns at UTC. Mocs fans still recall his four-touchdown game in a 33-31 win over No. 1 Marshall on Chamberlain Field on Oct. 2, 1993.
Following his career with UTC, he was selected by San Francisco in the third round (89
th) of the NFL Draft. It is still the highest a Moc has been selected in the draft since the NFL-AFL merger in 1967.
