The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team continued its strong run through the field at the 26th annual Steve Baras Memorial Tennis Tournament at the Champions Club today. The Lady Mocs have four individuals and three doubles tandems in finals of the main draws.
After posting a 10-1 mark in singles play on Friday, UTC's women's tennis squad went 4-3 as they moved deeper into the brackets today. Sophomore Emily Hangstefer upset the Mocs Draw No. 1 seed Alena Sergeychick (6-0, 6-3) of Kennesaw State. Hangstefer will now face Tennessee-Martin's Anna Winkelmann in the finals tomorrow.
Hangstefer also teamed with freshman Jenna Nurik to advance to the finals of the Chattanooga Doubles Flight. The duo posted two wins today and will face an Eastern Kentucky squad of Anouk Faure and Myriem Mhirit in Sunday's finals.
Sophomore Shaina Singh defeated Iesha Holton of Kennesaw State (6-3, 6-3) to advance to the Blue Flight finals. Freshman Jennifer Taylor is also set to compete in the finals of the Rivermont Flight after she took down Southern Illinois' Michela Cruise (6-0, 3-6, 7-5). Junior Annie Green is also in a main draw finals tomorrow. She defeated SIU's Martina Ce (1-6, 6-3, 6-4) to advance in the North Shore Flight.
Two other Moc tandems in doubles finals are sophomores Charlotte Bossy and Jennemieke van der Veek and Green and Wishing. Bossy and van der Veek won two matches today to advance to the finals of the Mocs Doubles Flight. Green and Wishing are in the finals of the Gold Doubles Flight.
