The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga held its final scrimmage before the start of the 2009 season at Finley Stadium. The Mocs played a full half of football before taking part in four-minute and two-minute drills.
"I thought the scrimmage was good," stated head coach Russ Huesman. "I thought we accomplished everything we needed to get done today as far as situations. I didn't think the offense played real well early, but towards the end they picked it up. They had a couple of good drives in the two-minute period to end the scrimmage."
The defense dominated the first quarter of play, forcing a three-and-out on two possessions and adding an interception and a safety two other times on the field.
Sophomore defensive back Joel Bradford picked off sophomore B. J. Coleman's attempt from first and 15, midway through the first period, stopping a drive that had crossed midfield.
Later in the period, the special teams pinned the offense back on its own one-yard-line. Freshman J.J. Jackson tried to get the Mocs out of the hole, but his run was stuffed by senior linebacker Tony Swafford for the safety.
The offense did not get on the board until its ninth possession when freshman Graham Nichols took over under center. He marched the team 65 yards on eight plays that culminated with a 27-yard touchdown strike to fellow freshman Terrance Davis. He also converted a third and 14 with freshman Marlon Anthony that resulted in a 28-yard gain in the drive.
Nichols finished the afternoon 7-7 for 115 yards and one touchdown. In the last two scrimmages, he is 11-11 for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Davis hauled in seven catches for 70 yards and the one score.
"I told (offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield) coming into this that I wanted the ball in (Davis's) hands and I wanted it in Brian Sutherland's hands," stated Huesman. "Both of those guys bring the same type of thing where they can make people miss if you can get the ball on the perimeter to them. Sutherland finished the day with four catches for a team-high 86 yards."
Coleman continued to work as the starting quarterback and finished 14-19 for 132 yards with one touchdown and the early pick. His touchdown pass came in the two-minute drill when he found junior tight-end Garrett Hughes in the back of the end zone for the score. He then hooked up with junior Chris Pitchford for the two-point conversion.
Hughes caught two passes on the afternoon, both for touchdowns. The other reception was a strike thrown from senior Jare Gault from five yards out, also in the back of the end zone.
"Garret is a great pass-catching tight-end," added Huesman. "He can run. He is not your typical 260-pound kid who is going to maul them off the ball, but we don't need him to do that with this offense. We are going to need him to catch five, six or seven balls a game this year."
Gault finished a strong afternoon, completing 10 of 14 pass attempts for 67 yards and the one score. Pitchford was second on the team with six catches that totaled 31 yards.
Freshman Chris Awuah led the ground game with 72 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown. His score came on an eight-yard dive to the pylon during the two-minute drills.
Freshman Bo Dyer made nine carries for 43 yards. He made three straight carries on two different drives during the afternoon.
Senior Shaun Kermah was also solid in the running game. He had eight carries for 60 yards and one touchdown. He broke free for a 47-yard gain late in the scrimmage. Sophomore Courtland Ellzey also scored today, punching in a one-yard run.
The defense was led by senior Doug Faatiliga's 10 tackles and one fumble recovery. Fellow senior Joseph Thornton added six tackles on the afternoon.
