CHATTANOOGA---Chattanooga Mocs senior
Garrett Engle advanced to the round of 32 at the United States Amateur today at Hazeltine National in Chaska, Minn. He decided to prove the old cliché, "it's a marathon, not a sprint".
Â
"It was definitely a stressful day," Engle shared via text. "A long day, but I kept fighting, and that's been the theme all week."
Â
Engle defeated Henry Guan in 25 holes to move forward. He now awaits the winner of (8) Bryan Kim and (57) Zach Pollo. Pollo was one of 11 to get into match play this morning in the 14-person playoff.
Â
But our focus is on Engle. The Harrisburg, Pa., native took an early 1 up lead on the first hole before his opponent flipped the score with wins at two and three. They halved the next three holes before Engle took three straight for a 2 up advantage at the turn.
Â
It dropped to 1 up after a bogey at 11 before becoming all square at 16 with an Engle double. Shot for shot was matched for eight straight holes before par on the par 5 25th hole (No. 7 on your scorecard) gave Engle the win.
Â
"I just need to rest up now," Engle added. "Reset mentally and physically and be ready to continue that same mindset."
Â
Thursday's action features two matches for the round of 32 winners with the remaining golfers eyeing an opportunity for Quarterfinal Friday.
