1 – Dee Oldham Richmond, Va., native
Jackson White was a very late addition to the 2015-16 Chattanooga Mocs basketball roster. He made his pledge in May. In this case, it seems familiarity breeds comfort.
"I love the area downtown," White stated about his new home. "All the people are nice. It's just a great community. It's pretty similar (to Richmond). A lot people do a lot of stuff outdoors. Richmond is right on the James, so there is a river close by. There are some similarities.
"I like going hiking...went kayaking one time here, I really liked that."
White plays with a high motor at the 4. He is considered a "stretch 4" which fits coach
Matt McCall's system.
"I think just from our style of play, Jackson has high basketball IQ and can really, really shoot and stretch the floor," McCall explained. "For 6-9 in our system where we want to run a lot of pick and rolls, he'll be a weapon out there."
When quizzed about what he thought he brought to the team, White all but echoed his coach's thoughts.
"I think I complement our other bigs (Justin) Tuoyo, Chuck (Ester), Duke (Ethridge) and even Rich (Kalina) some too," he shared. "Playing the trail spot, a stretch 4 is where I fit in there."
There is depth at his position with junior
Chuck Ester and senior
Duke Ethridge back along with senior
Casey Jones who has split time at the 3 and 4 throughout his career. But White enters the equation with good credentials.
He is a 2-star recruit according to verbalcommits.com coming to Chattanooga from Benedictine Prep School, where he played for Ryan Marable. White was a double-double performer his senior year averaging 10 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks per game.
"He's a great kid," McCall concluded. "He also has a short memory. He may at times make a mistake or miss a shot, but he's able to move on quickly to the next play.
"He's got a motor. We're throwing him out there against
Justin Tuoyo every day and he's not backing down."
