Head coach Jim FosterOn UTC's slow start to the game."Games are games. They're always different, and figuring out what you need to figure out is part of the process. But I thought we grinded defensively and got very good looks at the basket. The ball just didn't go in for the first four or five minutes of the first quarter. Once it did, we shot the ball fairly well and took advantage of our opportunities."
On the bench and Moses Johnson performance."We have depth. We've got players. I think for Moses, it's very obvious when you look at the stat sheet to see that she played very well. Visually, she played very well. But
Ansley Chilton coming off the bench was really important for us because
Jasmine Joyner struggled, and we really didn't have a post threat when Jasmine went to the bench last year. Ansley is a player where we can give it to her on the block and she can score. So, I liked our bench a lot today for that reason."
On how UTC guarded the three-point line well and played good defense overall."That was a strength of our team last year, and I think it will be a strength of ours again this year. We've got versatile perimeter players, and we can switch things and make it difficult for a team to shoot three's."
On the team's response in the fourth quarter when Butler brought the game within three points."You don't want to play a bunch of teams that you're going to beat by 30 points and think you'll know how good you are when a game gets close. You need to be in those kind of games. We've had two scrimmages that were tough for us where I think we learned a lot about ourselves. We've had two games now. I think there's some things we're doing very well and some things we have to do better."
Moses Johnson, guard, juniorOn her performance this game."I tried my best to bring a little energy. I think I had an okay performance. It's all about the team, so whatever I can do to help the team, I'm there for it."
How much of an emphasis is rebounding for the guards?"It's a big emphasis getting the boards and controlling them on the boards. I think that and defense is what helps lead us. If we don't get the rebound on defense, we can't go to offense. Getting offensive rebounds initiates more offense, so it's a big emphasis." Â
Where would you put the team's confidence after the first two games?"Confidence wise I don't think it means anything. We have to go out there and make sure the game before doesn't counteract with the game that we're playing. We go to every game assuming it's a fresh start."
How do you all approach the Indiana game Tuesday?"We're going to go and do what we do. Go and practice hard and prepare. We go in, and we play hard."
Aryanna Gilbert, guard/forward, sophomoreWhat got the team going in the first quarter?"I think we just tried to get some stops and turn our defense into offense."
How tough was Tori Schickel to cover inside?"She was big and strong. We just tried our hardest to front her and box her out. I felt like we did what we could with her."
Did you all sense a change in the team's demeanor near the end of the fourth quarter? "We just tried to keep the tempo up. You can sense change when things start to get close or down. Of course the team came hard. That's what they did. They came hard, and we just tried to keep the tempo. We tried to match with more aggressiveness."
Are you starting to get back into playing games?"I feel myself getting back into game shape. I was kind of nervous, so I feel like the nerves are off. I'm just getting back into game shape."Â
