Chattanooga Basketball Postgame Quotes
Chattanooga vs. Southern Miss
McKenzie Arena – Chattanooga, Tenn.
Friday – Nov. 20, 2015Head coach Jim FosterWhat were you telling the team during the third and fourth quarter?      "You have to guard and you have to rebound. Winning the ugly games is what determines how good of a season you have. It's easy to win when you play pretty. It's a lot harder to win when it's ugly. You have to grind and figure out a way, and we figured out a way. That's what good teams do. They figure out what they have to do to win."
How did the team win tonight?"Tonight we out-rebounded a team that is very athletic and very good on the board. We figured out that we need to start taking shots in a rhythm. Usually we rush the ball and the next pass goes to
Chelsey Shumpert, and she's going to take it. Well the next pass was going to other people tonight, and they were looking to make the next pass. I think by the time we got midway through the third quarter they started to understand that they had to take their shots."
"When we get a rhythm and we're in sync about taking the shots, you're chances of getting offensive rebounds are much greater. When you're wondering where the shots are going to come from and when they're going to come from, four people are standing around watching one person shoot the ball. Defense was gutty, timely, and did the right things. I think we grinded offensively until we found the way to score some points."
On Moses Johnson."I think she's very effective off the bench, and some players are just better off the bench. I thought when Moses comes into games she has a lot to offer. A lot of the times it is the rebounding dimension that she brings to it. She's been using her length defensively and being active on the glass. She's as good of an offensive rebounder that we have."
On Jasmine Joyner."Jas, she's gotten better every year. Obviously the dimension that we've added this year is that she's a three-point shooter. As she stands now, she might be our best three-point shooter with Chelsey not playing at the moment. She has the willingness to step out and take that shot.
"The shot she took from the side, a little two man action there with her and
Alicia Payne, that was a big shot. That was a big time shot. It was a timely shot. It was probably as much responsible for getting us back and winning the game as anything."
Jasmine JoynerOn the team's struggles in the second and third quarters."I feel like we just got too casual. We didn't communicate at some points. We just automatically thought that people were going to come in and know who they were guarding, so I feel like our defense got too casual.
"On offense, because some of us took shots and missed, we were scared to shoot it again. We were depending on the shot clock to rush up a shot instead of shooting when we had quality shots."
On what changed when they started finding success midway through the fourth quarter."Coach talked to us, and we talked to each other. Coach told us we had to shoot the ball. When we're not shooting well, that's when we need one of us to go in and get an offensive rebound. And that's how we were able to start getting fouled and getting put-backs, or getting another chance to reset."
On how the team has to approach the game against Tennessee on the road."We have to get better in the two practices that we have, because it's going to be tough playing there because of their fans. They feel like just because they're playing at home that they automatically have a win. So we have to play tough.
"This is a game where we have to be determined and we have to come together. We have to play together, and we have to play smart. We have to be on our toes because they're going to be coming after us."
Moses JohnsonOn how difficult it is to stay ready when you're not playing for over a quarter."I don't think it's hard because we talk about staying ready all the time. You never know when your team is going to need you. Basically, you just always have to be there – always into the game – so when that time comes, you're ready."
About how good does the come-back win feel after a loss to Indiana."I mean, it's a good feeling. We've got to be grateful for situations like these. When you're put in these types of situations and you're able to convert, it's a good feeling. But now we just have to move on. It's temporary. This game is over with, and it's behind us. Right now, we feel pretty good, but we have to move on to the next one."
