Postgame Quotes vs. Wofford

Head coach Matt McCall
On the team's offense tonight.
"To start the game, they came out and guarded us totally different from the first time, which is to be expected. They are normally a team that really jumps out and tries to hard hedge on pick-and-rolls, and they didn't do that today. They were going to let our guards try to make plays, and they were leveling on pick-and-rolls. It took us a second to get into the flow.

"I actually thought the 30-second calls almost hurt us a little bit to start the game. Not in the sense that it wasn't good defense, but we weren't able to get out on the break. Obviously that's our biggest strength when we can get out on a break and get some easy baskets. Once we settled in and started running some offense and attacking their hedging, we were much more effective.

"I also thought that we turned it over way too much, nine turnovers in the first half. In the second half, we only had five. But nine turnovers against a team that doesn't really press, and there were just some bad ones – just trying to force too many things at times. They're a terrific team. I have the utmost respect for Mike Young and the job that he does there.

"Spencer Collins I thought was the key to the game. When he goes for 20, they usually win. Every shot he took I felt was earned, and he took 16 shots in the game, but I don't know that he ever had a clean look. Our guys did a great job, and I really want to give a lot of credit to our scout team too. K.J. Bates, Alex Bran, ZaQwaun Matthews, Jackson White, they did a heck of a job with our scout team the last two days of practice."

On Tre' McLean and Justin Tuoyo's performance.
"I thought Tre' was really, really aggressive, especially when we were struggling offensively. I thought Tre' kind of turned on the burners a couple times there and got down the lane and made some plays. The same thing with Tuoyo, I was trying to establish him early in the game. We went inside to him a couple times. He kept attacking.

"He made good, aggressive moves and got to the free throw line. He was eight-for-nine from the free throw line, and then he gets his five blocks. He's such a rim protector. But overall great effort. We got great minutes from Dee Oldham tonight. Duke Ethridge was in a little bit of foul trouble, but he gave us some good minutes in the second half. It was just a total team effort there."

On being 20-3.
"Your record is a complete reflection of your past. 20-3 is not helping us on Saturday, so we have to turn around and start to get locked in and prepared on our next opponent on a short turn around."

What do you want to improve on?
"We always are trying to grow. We're always trying to get better. I think that we need to continue to get better defensively, not missing assignments so much. I think we have to get better offensively, executing better when teams try to take us out of our stuff, and not getting so much back on our heels. But if you take this away, here's the next option.

"Fourteen turnovers tonight, that's too many. We have to clean that up, and that's just execution. On Saturday, Furman is one of the more pressuring teams in the half court. Their pressure in the half court caused us a lot of problems in Greenville, so we have to use tomorrow to get better no question."

On shooting 58 percent.
"I like to see us shoot a higher percentage from the three-point line. We were four-for-14. But 58 percent shows me that we're getting really good shots, and we're sharing the ball. We're playing unselfish, and we're getting the ball where it needs to go. We'll take 58 percent every single night even when shooting a bad percentage from the three-point line."

Tre' McLean, forward, junior
On what the keys were behind the scoring runs.
"We had to play harder. To start off the game, they were the more desperate team, and the last few times we've played them the more desperate team won the game. Tonight to start the game off, that was Wofford. We had to change our mentality."

On reducing the number of team turnovers.
"It's just all about being tight, more precise and we had a lot of careless turnovers. As a team, things like that happen but we don't want them to. It's part of basketball. We'll look at it tomorrow, and we'll get it right."

Justin Tuoyo, forward, junior
On defense picking up in the second half.
"We just really knew that their offense was really good, and that's a credit to our scout team. They did a great job with preparing us this whole week, and in the second half, we knew what was coming. The guards did a great job getting through the screens, and we had to do a better job boxing out.

"They had 10 offensive rebounds, but we just knew that a big part was guarding the three-point line. In the second half, we had to put that in the front of our minds and that's what we did."

On being one of a few teams nationally with 20 wins.
"We feel good because we're having a great season so far, but it doesn't mean anything in the regular season. We know that every time we go out, teams want that. We have to go out there and play, because everybody is hungry and want to hunt us. But we need to be the ones doing the hunting still. We're still out there trying to accomplish something, and our whole team knows that."

Head coach Mike Young
On not being able to get shots.
"I think that's fair to Matt McCall and those players. I admire their basketball IQ. They're smart. That's what you get with senior and juniors. Eric Robertson's seen a lot of plays. Justin Tuoyo is a game changer with his length, one that you don't see in a league such as ours often, so I would think that would be a fair assessment."

"We had some cracks. I thought we did some very nice things. It's February 4, and they're better than we are. I've got a good basketball team. I like the direction of my basketball team, and we'll look forward to Saturday and beyond."

Where do you see the league at this point on February 4?
"I've been in the league a very long time. It's a good. It's as hard night in, night out as I can recall in recent memory. There's been a lot of great teams. Mercer is really good. Furman is talented and playing good ball. East Tennessee, we know what they're capable of.

"Samford is 2-8, and they have a good basketball team. They've got good players, and Scott's (Padgett) doing a nice job with them. It's hard. You know every night out is going to be a gut-wrencher. You're going to have to play your best basketball if you expect to win."

Where would you put Chattanooga in terms of what you've seen?
"I admire them, and I think Matt is doing a terrific job with them. Early February, I'm not ready to anoint them the most special I've seen, but take nothing away from them, that is not a slight on Chattanooga. We have a month left to play.

"You roll eight juniors and seniors out there, eight guys that are physically Division I basketball players, guys that can shoot it like Robertson, swing like McLean. That's a hard match up for a three, is a really hard match up for a four – the big guy in the post that seems to score when he plays the interior. They have a lot of really interesting pieces. They seem to enjoy playing together. I admire that."
