Postgame Quotes at Mercer

Head coach Matt McCall
On this game being a tournament-like game.
"It was just a high-level game all around. I felt like early in the game we were able to take their best punch there. And I thought that we got down seven points there and didn't really flinch, which I thought was really big in the game. We were able to get Eric Robertson some open looks there from the three, which got him going.

"I kept talking to Eric just that he's a powder keg. He's getting ready to explode, there's no question about it. And he did that tonight. He works so hard on his craft. He may have an off night shooting the basketball, but very rarely is he going to play consecutive games where he has a tough time shooting the basketball. I thought that was big in the first half. He had 15 points at the end of the half, ends up with 20, but makes a huge one late in the game.

"Dee Oldham made a really big one late in the game. I thought that was big. Justin Tuoyo was big in overtime. He had a huge move down in the post, and then some things opened up because of his presence on the inside.

"We found a way to win the game on the road in an unbelievable environment. I know we've played in some good environments, but this one is up there. Great crowd. Obviously, it's been a difficult week for everyone in this basketball family."

On the performances by Justin Tuoyo and Mercer's Andrew Fishler.
"I thought Fishler was great for them tonight, just as a presence. He had eight blocks in the game, that's some Justin Tuoyo-like stuff there. I told Tuoyo in the overtime, we were going to go to him (Justin) on the first possession of overtime. He got it inside there. And then we came back to him in the overtime. He stuck with it. He never got rattled. He continued to play in the game."

On losing the rebounding battle.
"We didn't get stops to start the second half. I went zone to start the second half because I didn't want Tuoyo to pick up his third foul. We gave up an offensive rebound. There were just so many loose balls that we didn't get. We were just trading baskets back and forth. We needed to do a better job at getting stops there to start halves off. We can't just be sitting there relying so heavily on your offense. There were just rebounds that we didn't come down with. We have to get better there."

On Chuck Ester's performance and getting stops in overtime.
"In overtime, Chuck got some really big rebounds for us. He's such a presence down there as far as rebounding the basketball. He really went up top, and ended up with nine rebounds today. I can remember he had some really big ones down the stretch there, especially in overtime.

"We got stops when we needed to in overtime. I thought that was big to be able to score a basket and get a couple consecutive stops in. Greg Pryor fouls out, and we didn't get rattled. Johnathan Burroughs-Cook goes to the line and makes two really big free throws for us in overtime. That's what a team is, a total team effort."

On the game being like a chess match.
"It was definitely a game of runs and momentum swings. We went down late in the game. Tuoyo goes to the line and makes two huge free throws. In this environment, going 17 for 20 from the free throw line as the road team, I couldn't be more proud of our team and our guys."

On it being a long stretch of games.
"We didn't have a chance to catch our breath. And to be honest, I don't know if we really get an opportunity to. We play on Thursday. We'll get back late tonight. We have to go to school tomorrow, make sure we handle our academics. And then we turn around and leave on Wednesday and play in a very difficult environment on Thursday.

"It's not a one-day prep. You look at these last few games. You play Wofford, who's one of the better teams in our league. One-day prep, you play Furman, one of the better teams in our league. One-day prep, you play at Mercer on the road, who's one of the better teams in our league. That's a difficult stretch there. I'm really proud of our guys for handling that stretch and moving on to the next game and taking the scouting and the coaching."

Dee Oldham, guard, senior
On being a tough game in a great atmosphere.
"Two teams can't go home with a victory. Hats off to Mercer they played good ball tonight. They definitely came ready to play. I'm lost for words. It feels so good."

On having one day to get ready for Mercer.
"You have to look at it like this, in order to win the tournament, you have to be able to win back-to-back nights against good competition, against good opponents. Any game in this conference can go any way any night.

"So yes it's a close stretch, we turn around and keep playing back-to-back. But like I said, in order to win the league tournament, you have to do that. So now is good preparation for that. It's good for us."

On a lot of people stepping up and playing well tonight.
"The good thing about our team is we have different guys that can go. You never know whose night it's going to be. When they take away one that may open up something for someone else. That's a bonus to this team."

On his three-pointer to give the Mocs the lead 59-56 in the last minute of regulation.
"The fact that my teammates believed in me to pass me that ball, I had to knock it down. I couldn't let them down. But that was just a basket. A minute is a lot of time left. A lot of things can happen in a minute."

Eric Robertson, guard, senior
On it being a fun game.
"It was a really exciting game. It came down to the wire. It was a really close game, and I'm sure the fans enjoyed watching the game and thought it was a good game."

On hitting five three-pointers in the first half.
"In the first half, my teammates were doing a good job of finding me when I was open, and I was getting good looks. Tonight they were just falling, so I'm grateful for that."

Was this a revenge game from losing at Mercer last year in overtime?
"It doesn't have anything to do with revenge. That's not anything we even talked about. This year's a new year. We are just striving to win the next game. Tonight Mercer was the next game, and that's who we were striving to beat. We were fortunate enough to be able to get the win."
