Russ Huesman, head football coach
Opening statement after 41-21 win over Samford.
"Great win. We beat a good football team that has great skill kids that were hard to tackle. It was great to run the ball like we did and had some stops. Both teams made mistakes, the penalties and the turnovers that will come back to bite you. I'm a little disappointed in that, but I'm very proud of our football team. I thought they played really hard. It was a big team effort from everyone, fantastic job and I'm proud of everyone. Fantastic football win."
On Derrick Craine's 222 rushing yards
"That's incredible. He runs so hard and is such an excellent player. He doesn't care if he gets two yards or 222 yards, fantastic individual. So proud of him and what he has accomplished in his time here. He runs hard and hit the creases formed by the offensive line, he'll give them credit too."
Stopping Samford's passing attack
"Our defense knew that they were going to throw the football. We put a lot of pressure on them, and they have great wide-outs. They throw it out quick and get the ball to their skill players to make plays. Fortunately, on the short ones, we got most of them on the ground quick with exception of a couple but that was key."
Â
Offensive line play
"I think for the most part, when you rush for 285 yards, against a good defense...it's always impressive. It was a little make-shift, but I thought our guys did an excellent job."
Focusing on next week against ETSU
"I think we have to get some of our little flaws out, and we'll practice just like always. They'll come and work, and we have to get ready to play. I think it's going to turn into a fantastic rivalry playing again, but I think it's fantastic and I'm glad they are back in the league."
Alejandro Bennifield, quarterback, junior
On win over Samford
"A win is always good. We had some mistakes here and there, but we fought back hard and kept playing. We definitely put up a lot of yards so credit the whole offensive squad, especially the offensive line."
On the offensive line play
"They played outstanding today through all the heat and the injuries so I really have to give them credit for the work they put in. We ran the ball well and protected the passer, so it was a great effort by those guys."
On Derrick Craine's performance
"That's why they call him the 'Craine Traine'. The offensive line created some holes, and he punched it through and finished the runs strong. (You) have to give credit to both Craine and the offensive line."
Â
Derrick Craine, running back, senior
Career-high 222 rushing yards
"I have to give credit to the offensive line. All five of them they were out there hustling for me today working hard. Even the wide receivers were in front of me blocking linebackers and safeties. They were all outstanding today."
On the balanced offense attack
"You look at 521 yards of total offense, and its split pretty much down the middle. It was very well-balanced. We were able to get more in the passing game in the first half and then rushing the ball in the second half."
On the successful start to the offense this season
"I have to hand it to all the coaches. Drawing up game plans and getting us prepared for success. When you start rushing the ball well then the passing game opens up, and it works both ways. I was out there blocking for Alejandro when needed and then rushing the ball when the holes opened up."
Dale Warren, linebacker, junior
On the week leading up to Samford
"This week of game planning was prepared well from all our coaches, the scout team did well, everyone did well on and off the field. So when it came time for game time, we got the win that we worked hard for all week."
On preparation off the field
"That is very important to all of our players. We try to limit the distraction off the field so we can produce as best as we can on the field. I guess it works out at the end of the day because we got the win we all wanted."
Corey Levin, offensive lineman, senior
On blocking for Derrick Craine
"He definitely is something else. He runs hard every time he has the ball in his hands. He makes you want to block that much harder for him. We had a great scheme coming into today, and we practiced it well all week, so it was great that we came out and executed it. Even when we weren't 100 percent, Craine was 120 percent."
On Alejandro Bennifield's play
"We make it a main focus to keep the quarterback clean. That's one of our top goals as an offensive line. He's a great passer, great decision maker, great play maker, and we trust him with any decision he makes on the field."
Â
Keionta Davis, defensive lineman, senior
On today's performance and Samford's offense
"It's definitely something we look forward to as a defensive line and something I look forward to myself (Samford's passing attack). We get excited to go out there and make plays for the team and do whatever it takes to win the football game. I think I left a couple sacks out there, but all-in-all, we got the win and that's what matters most."
On Dale Warren's play
"That man is an athlete. He just has a nose for the ball. It makes our job so much easier when the linebackers run to the ball, they turn it back to us, and things like that all gel together as a unit."
