Tom Arth, Head Coach
On today's performance.
"It wasn't good enough. We came up short. We had a chance there at the end. I don't think it should have came to that type of situation. There was a lot of really good things; a lot of improvements. But it just wasn't good enough."
On Brandon Dowdell's play.
"I thought Brandon did a great job. He really got some great returns and sparked a lot of energy. He put our offense in great positions on a number of different occasions today."
On the last drive.
"We did a great job executing, getting down there and putting ourselves in position. We really kind of emptied the red zone call sheet in there. Unfortunately, we had a shot, I think it was second down, and had a good look and almost made the play and would have won the game. We just missed on that and had to throw the ball a couple of times with pressure. It's good decisions by Cole. But again, you don't want to be in those situations. You have four shots at the end zone and you want to make sure you get four big looks at it. The interception, it was close. There was a window there but we just missed it by a little bit. We can't be upset with that at the end. It's nobody's fault on that. We just didn't make the play."
On third down conversions.
"There was a variety of different factors that played into that. At the end of the day, overall, it has to be better. We put ourselves in some third-and-shorts, third-and-twos, some third-and-threes, some third-and-fours, that we didn't convert on. It's hard to be a good football team when we can't convert on third-and-short like that."
On the hardest part about defending an option team.
"Honestly, apart from big plays, missed tackles, and some poor execution we defended the dive a lot better. We played the pitch better towards the second half. But we just gave up some plays and missed some tackles; such a critical part of defending options. You have to tackle well. We didn't tackle constantly well throughout the course of the game. That hurts you."
Cole Copeland, Fr.-QB
On play of offensive line and RB Darrell Bridges.
"Our offensive line did a great job and Darrell [Bridges] hit all the holes. We can't give them enough credit, they bailed us out on some occasions. There's a lot of positives that will come out of this."
On improvement from offensive line in pass protection.
"We need to be better as quarterbacks and put them in the right protection calls. That's where it all starts up front. I'm really proud of this group, we all have each others backs. I just need to take care of the ball more for us to have success."
On final pass play in the end zone.
"We had a good play call. I just stared it down a second too long and the safety jumped. I need to get it out a little bit quicker."
Taylor Reynolds, Sr.-DL
On defending rushing attack from The Citadel.
"We knew they were going to come out and run it down our defense. We came in with a great game plan and I felt like we executed it. They hit a couple holes, but overall we did well."
On creating negative plays on defense.
"It was good to get those negative plays and set them up for second, third and long. The negative plays are hard to come by, but when you can get them you have to capatalize."
On the play from Tae Davis.
"He had a great week of practice. I saw him everywhere a lot more at practice and saw him running around today. He made some big plays for us today, it was huge for us."
Tae Davis, Sr.-LB
On overall performance of today's game.
"It was a really physical game, we knew that coming in. I'm pleased with our team performance. We didn't get the win but there are a ton of bright spots. We executed today and were really physical, that's been a focus for us."
On stopping the dive play from The Citadel's triple-option attack.
"Coach (Arth) told us they would test us with the dive today. As a defense we stood up and said they weren't going to get the dive moving. I think we did that tonight."
On what to improve; what improved in the game.
"We need to work more on covering side to side. That's something we need to work on and continue to craft. Coaches did a great job with the adjustments today and we started to really stop them."
Darrell Bridges, Sr.-RB
On performance today.
"Our offense is about getting the ball to the studs. Today it was my number that got called and I tried to do everything I could. We didn't get the win but we all came out here and played hard."
On first quarter 61-yard TD run.
"I could tell I'm getting old. I knew the whole time that I had just enough but all my teammates said I was cutting it too close."
