Postgame Quotes
Lamont Paris, Head Coach
On amount of mistakes in tonight's loss.
"You can't do that against anyone. There were plenty of them. We got off to a rough start and that ended up continuing the entire game. Sometimes you get the bull and sometimes the bull gets you. We didn't compete the way we can and are capable of. That's the bottom of line with me. I don't even need to look at the stat sheet. We didn't compete how we're capable of."
On 'competing' and what it means to this team.
"I use that word a lot and it's not a word to use lightly. Not a lot of people understand what it means to compete. We're not competing in the manner of making their shots more difficult. We weren't competing in the manner of battling on the glass. We didn't fight at all on the boards. That's what bothers me. We didn't see as much intimidation or anything like that. I told them I'm looking forward to getting back in the gym with the team I recognize. Some things are non-negotiable. It's tough focusing on things in one game and then lose the attention to details in the next. That's what's frustrating to me."
On UAB creating turnovers.
"Some of them were because of specific breakdowns in our defensive principles. We have to make a decision on how to guard, who to guard and adjust to that. When you don't do that, no one knows what to do. We end up getting out-numbered on the back side because of that."
On young makeup of roster.
"I understand that. I think the guys know that my expectations for them are not unrealistic. They know the things I ask them to do are things they can absolutely can do. Lack of concentration and lack of detail killed us tonight. When we spent a lot of time talking about what they were going to do, and in the first 15 seconds of the game they did just that and we didn't react, we can't have that. I'm a patient person. The attitude of this team has been really good and that's encouraging to me. We have to go back and get after it again. I'm not going to hold them to a standard that's unfair. But I will hold them to a high standard that's not directly related to age and experience, but more of energy and competing."
On returning home Thursday against Hiwassee.
"It's another opportunity to show improvement. We need another opportunity to show what we've done and can do. We need to compete and have some successes. Those can come in a lot of different ways. We need to go back to the drawing board."
Makale Foreman – So.-G
On getting behind early:
"We didn't have a great start. The first play, we talked about not letting them duck in and we let them duck in. We just have to get off to a better start and play our rules.Â
"Can't let them duck in on us. Can't let them go baseline. I probably let them go baseline a few times. We just have to stick to the rules that coach gave us and stay true to them."Â
On UAB's inside play:
"They did drive the ball well. We weren't in the gaps that much and they were just getting into the lane and hitting shots. We weren't sliding our feet well and not getting into the gaps. We are going to get back to work on that in practice."Â
On progressing early in the season:
"We shot 19-54 from the field. We didn't put the ball in the hoop and that was probably one of the main problems we had. All we have to do is get back to practice and get to work. We are a young team and we know that, but we have to grow each day and come back and play even harder".Â
On being a leader on the team:
"Me, Makinde, Nat, Rod, we are kind of young. The young guys are depending on us because we did play last year and we have some experience. I feel like we have to be a little bit better and come out with a better start and play better defense."
David Jean-Baptiste – Fr.-G
On open looks from outside:
"They were big inside, so that forced us to play from the outside. They did a good job with that, so anytime I had the chance, our jumpers were pretty open."Â
On playing better defense:
"The way we started off the game, we have to do a better job than that. They really packed it inside with their two bigs and that was a big advantage they had. That was something they were really focused on." Â
