Postgame Quotes

Lamont Paris, Head Coach
On team's effort in OT loss.
"They battled. That's how we got to where we were in the game. Jacksonville State is a physical team and they're very good. They're well-coached and unless you just have better players, you don't get to that point in the game without battling. I was proud of our guys for that. Our mentality, we're not afforded the luxury of feeling like that's a great thing, just to compete. We have to learn to find ways to control things at the end of the game so we can control to change the outcome of the game."

On turnovers and rebounding margins.
"Those are possessions you don't get back. Anything can happen on those possession. Maybe we hit a three, maybe we grind them down and make them work harder. Anything can happen on those possessions. Another thing was rebounding and I think you can have a lot of control over that. If you put yourself in a better position, by nature, you'll have an advantage. That's why offensive rebounds are hard to come by because the defense has an advantage. They're always important, especially at the end of the game. They can give a team life. They can be deflating to a team so it's important. We didn't do a good job of rebounding well enough tonight."

On moving forward after tough loss.
"I'm very supportive of our guys and I really care about them. I want to help them with some things, but they know they won't get any sympathy from me in situations like this. There were moments where these guys have never been in or seen before. They've never been in a situation where they had to make a play or make a pass, defend the best player. That just doesn't happen automatically. Our level of expectations for a team isn't dependant on the final score, but it's high in the way we execute, battle and compete, which ultimately leads to success."

On battle tonight from the team.
"We just fight. Coach [Paris] has seen it all. Whether you're undersized or oversized, it doesn't matter, it's all about heart. I'm proud of our team. We have to keep taking steps. We're not a finished product and we're nowhere near where our ceiling is. We just try to work hard every day to be better than the day before. It hurts. There was a lot we could have controlled tonight. You just have to fight that's what it comes down to."

On maturing with young guys.
"It's no secret, we're young. Teams know that. It's no secret. We have a lot of guys in new positions, but we just play basketball. Maturity, we've been harping on it. We're trying to grow and step up in these opportunities. We'll go back to the drawing board, watch film, learn what we did wrong and try to correct that. We let this one slip away, but we played hard. We can't settle for this at the end of the day."

On sticking to team's principles.
"When we stay solid to who we are defensively and offensively, we forced them into a lot of mistakes. We got under their skin a little bit. It's all about how you come back from this and how you pick up your head the next day. This one hurts. It's growing up. We're maturing together, no one is above one another on this team. In the long run, we'll be where we want to be when we hold this standard of accountability for each other."

Rodney Chatman, So.-G
On complete level of performing.
"We didn't perform well, but we performed okay. At the end of the game, we needed to box out and get rebounds and that would have put us over the top. So to perform well, we have to do everything well, and I don't think we did that tonight."

On losing rebound late in game.
"They were tougher than us. Coach always tells us we need to compete. On that possession we didn't compete as hard as we could and it lost us the game."

On Jacksonville State and moving forward.
"They're a great team. If we follow our roles you can see it'll put us in great positions to win the game like it did tonight. With more reps and practice we trust this process and are locked in ready to go."
