NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2018 season at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt at Percy Warner Park. The men finished 12th overall while the women placed 15th.
Â
"We had some kids that ran some good races in each race,"Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "Some kids, typical of the first race of the year, it kind of opened their eyes and they had to remember what it was like to run hard again. We have some who will run better next time."
Â
Ryan Gebelein paced the men's team with a 49th place overall finish. He covered the 8,000 meter course, on a hot and humid day in the Music City, in a time of 26:33.2. Freshman Jonathon Boyd stepped up in his first collegiate race, coming across the finish line second for the Mocs in a time of 26:59.8
Â
"Ryan ran just like he did last year, he's very consistent," Meyer said. "He's always going to be one of our top two guys. I'm really pleased with Jonathon Boyd, being a freshman and performing as well as he did. He was about 25 seconds behind Ryan. Jonathon just did really well for us this race.
Â
Mark Britt ran the course in a time of 27:11.5 followed by Gavin Hasty with a time of 27:17.6
Â
Chattanooga was just behing host Vanderbilt and Clemson and placed ahead of Murray State and Tennessee State. Samford was seventh.
Â
Eastern Kentucky had five of the top seven finishers and led the way in the men's race with 20 points finishing well ahead of Louisville who had two in the top 10 and 85 points. Belmont took third, Tennessee Tech was fourth and Lipscomb fifth.
Â
The Colonels' James Sugira finished alone in first with a time of 24:08.1, more than 33 seconds ahead of Lousiville's Emmanuel Cheboson. Eastern Kentucky's David Corrales finished third followed by teammates Jaime Romo and Zak Kirk.
Â
In the women's race, Emily Poole, Chattanooga returning all-conference runner, finished first for UTC, crossing the line in a time of 18:54.0 for 68th place overall. She was followed by Hannah Caldwell (19:22.6), Sophia Neglia (19:31.2) and Rebekah Wich (19:41.6).
Â
"Emily paced the team as she did last year," Meyer said. "Hannah Caldwell had a really good race. She's starting to put some things together and we really need that from her. Sophia was really consistent last year. She's come back this year and doing to the exact same thing. Rebekah Wich ran a fairly good race for us. She hasn't run the past two year. She was redshirted and then had to sit out last year. She came in and did a phenomenal job for us."
Â
The women placed ahead of UAB, Murray State, Southern Conference foe Mercer and Tennessee State. Just ahead of UTC was Samford in 13th place and Southern Illinois. Ohio State claimed the women's title with 105 points followed by Illinois and host Vanderbilt.
Â
Louisville's Dorcas Wasike claimed the women's overall title with a time of 17:09.4 followed by Tennessee Tech's Purity Sanga and Eastern Kentucky's Lilian Kiborus. The women's race featured 186 runners from 19 schools.
Â
Up next for the Mocs is the Greater Louisville Classic on September 29 in Louisville, Ky.
