Matthews Melds Seamlessly into Mocs Family Atmosphere

This is the fifth of a six-part series featuring newcomers to the Chattanooga Mocs men’s basketball program’s 2015-16 active roster.

1 – Dee Oldham | 2 – Jackson White | 3 – Peyton Woods | 4 – Rich Kalina

ZaQwaun Matthews signed with the Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball program in November 2014. The Charlotte, N.C., native came to see his new family win at Wofford last season. He was committed to the program. Then April happened.

He originally signed with Will Wade who took the head coaching job at VCU. Enter Florida assistant coach Matt McCall. He stuck to his commitment.

"I like the style of play Florida had," Matthews explained before focusing on the returners. "The team really made me stay here. When I realized nobody was leaving, that really bought me in. I wanted to play with these guys.

"When I first got here, I could tell the connection was very strong. They didn't push me away, they brought me in like family. It was easy connecting with them."

McCall tied together the family connection.

"The first thing is, he is an unbelievable kid," he noted. "That's evident by how he was raised. His mother did an unbelievable job. A lot of who he is as a person is because of where he comes from.

"He comes from a really close family, so that family atmosphere ties in really closely with our team's connection."

Matthews is well-known for his loyalty. He stuck with his high school squad (Myers Park) at a time when a lot of prep athletes bounce around from program-to-program, team-to-team in a quest for the next level.

"I got a lot of offers for prep schools and places like that," he added. "But my high school team had a great chemistry. We played together since middle school, so I didn't want to leave them."

ZaQwaun has flashed in practice and scrimmages with fantastic athleticism. His continued skill work and the opportunity to learn from the likes of upperclassmen Casey Jones, Eric Robertson, Tre' McLean, Greg Pryor, Dee Oldham and Johnathan Burroughs-Cook in the backcourt.

Tickets are on sale at GoMocs.com, at the McKenzie Arena Gate One Ticket Office or by calling (423) 266-MOCS (6627). The Mocs play an exhibition game against Covenant on Friday, Nov. 6, before opening the season a week later at Georgia. The home opener is Monday, Nov. 16, vs. Hiwassee.
