Postgame Quotes at Illinois

Head coach Matt McCall
Do you view the wins against Illinois and Georgia as upsets?
"I think anytime a team from a mid-major conference is playing against a BCS conference team, it's going to be considered an upset or people want to talk about it as an upset. Our guys showed unbelievable resiliency and perseverance tonight when it really could have gone the other way.

"Whether it's an upset or not, I was just really proud of how our team played and how they continue to play even though there was some things that weren't going our way in the game. They kept fighting and found a way in the end to win the game."

On getting off to an early lead.
"We pressed early on in the game, which was great. We were able to get some turnovers early on. Illinois is playing without a true point guard, which is obviously a tough deal for them. I really wanted to get our press on early in the game and really see if we could get some turnovers and easy baskets.

"When you're playing in an environment like this, on the road in a BCS-level school, if you can get your team off to a good start, you're going to end up having a chance at the end of the game. I felt like we were able to do that with our press. We were able to get some stops early, get on a break, get some easy baskets, and then you start playing with more and more confidence as the game goes."

On the end of first half and Illinois taking the lead in the second.
"I really felt like our guys toward the end of the first half started to try to do it by themselves, instead of doing it with each other. I felt like that second half when Illinois ended up taking a nine-point lead, I felt like our guys again, let me try to go and do this by myself, and you can't play that way.

"When we move and share and pass the basketball and play for each other, we're a pretty good team. We got back to that late in the game, and again we got wide open looks. Chuck Ester made two. Tre' McLean made one. That's how we ended up taking the game back over was because of that. The ball kept moving and playing."

On starting first season as a head coach with wins over Georgia and Illinois.
"The biggest thing for me, obviously Coach (Billy) Donovan did an unbelievable job preparing me for the opportunity here. He really does a great job with his assistant coaches, preparing them to be head coaches for when they sit in this seat. We have a long season ahead. I want our guys to enjoy this tonight, but we have to get back to work tomorrow. We have a quick turnaround against a top-five team in the country."

On six Mocs with double figures tonight.
"That's what we want every single night. We want our guys having a high number of assists and sharing the basketball, so we're going to get five or six guys in double figures. We have the firepower and the depth on offense to be able to do that almost every single night.

"We have to clean up some of the turnovers. Nineteen is way too many for us. Depth can be attributed to how we're playing and trying to do a little too much one-on-one. We are capable of getting five or six guys in double figure every single night and obviously that's our goal."

Greg Pryor, guard, junior
Do you feel like the win against Illinois was an upset?
"No, I don't feel like any game we go into this year will be an upset. We're preparing ourselves to win every game. We just have to go in and play. Everybody on our schedule we can beat, so we are going into every game knowing that we have our chance to win. So we go in and play as hard as we can."

Is this a different feeling than past seasons?
"It's definitely a different season. In the seasons past, we would come into these games expecting to just go in and play as hard as we can and whatever happens, happens. We've been coming up a little short every year my previous two years playing.

"We changed our mindset, knowing that we are going to win and be prepared to win. We came in knowing that we weren't going to come up short like we had the last couple of years."

How did you and the team adjust late in the game?
"We prepared for this in practice. We got into a lot of foul trouble. Our bench came in and played a great game, and they played great defense. They helped us a lot."

How confident are you in the whole team, not just the starters?
"We have a lot of confidence. That's what we focus on and practice on is our confidence. We have confidence from our one man to our fourteenth on the bench. Whenever your name or jersey is called, everybody is coming in ready to play. We don't have any doubts."

Tre' McLean, forward, junior
On making both free throws at key time.
"I was definitely confident. I spend a lot of time in the gym. I knew it was like practice, like shooting in the backyard. Shooting with confidence, I know it will go in. I know my team has a lot of confidence in me. My coaches have a lot of confidence in me, so that helps a lot."

What's the character of the team right now?
"We are hungry. Every day we are hungry and want to get better. We're 3-0, but that's not it. We're chasing greatness. We're determined."

On playing Iowa State Monday.
"Just like this one, we're going to prepare. We are going to go in and play hard. They're very good. They're talented. We just going to prepare and go at it."
