Head coach Matt McCallOn the come-back win against Wofford."Anytime you can come into this building and get a win with the job Mike Young has done with the Wofford Terriers. To be down by four at the half, I was pretty animated at the half. I was pretty animated when I burned a timeout there to start the second half. All I talked about at the half was guarding the three-point line and rebounding.
"We started the second half, and they made a three and we gave up an offensive rebound. That goes back to just being tough, being physical and playing the right way. Our guys really responded. I also felt like, looking down at the stats sheet, we had five guys hit double figures. That's how we should play. That's how it should be every night.
"We go on the road and beat Wofford and our best shooter doesn't even make a shot. You're taking that every night. The biggest thing I've been preaching to these guys is team and playing for each other. I don't think there was a guy more excited in the locker room than
Eric Robertson. The guy didn't even score, and that's what it's about. That's playing for each other. That's playing as a team. For whatever reason, we didn't have that on Saturday, but we responded well, the right way tonight."
On Eric Robertson having a big defensive play."He was great. He impacts winning. He makes so many plays. I was joking with him the other day in practice. I know he wants to go to grad school. I was trying to find a way if we have his grad school program so we can keep him around for another year. Because he's the type of human being you want to be around. He impacts winning.
"He made some big plays.
Greg Pryor's steal on the sideline where he dove for the ball was a big play. Those are game winning plays, and we had a lot of them tonight. I thought it was a total team effort. I really did. I thought we had great minutes out of everybody.
On Dee Oldham's performance in the first half."We could not rebound the ball in the first half for whatever reason. They're a physical team. I said to our assistants, 'We have to keep Dee on the floor because he's rebounding the ball. So we need to keep him in the game.'
Duke Ethridge struggled offensively in the first half, but he didn't give up. He had a huge dunk, and then he made a big three.
Johnathan Burroughs-Cook made a really big three. I just thought it was a total team effort."
On being aggressive."Wofford shoots a lot of three's. They rely a lot on their perimeter guys, and they made them. We talked about Fletcher Magee before the game. That guys going to be a force to be reckoned with in the Southern Conference for a long time. I saw Fletcher play as a freshman, kind of watched his high school career develop.
"I told him after the game that I was really proud of him. He's a guy that has a quick trigger. He doesn't need a lot of time to get it off. At a high level conference game, he goes five for 10 from the three point line."
On 15-0 run after game tied at 53-53."It was stops. It was rebounds. The press was really, really good.
Chuck Ester was a monster in the front of the press tonight. There was one point where
Casey Jones stood up and said, 'We have to get Chuck off the floor. He's exhausted.' I said 'Well, what do you want to go in for him?' But I thought he was terrific in front of the press. They really struggled with him up there. We were good with our rotations in the back. We were able to get some stops."
Justin Tuoyo, forward, juniorOn playing well against a good team."We knew it was a team to beat. Our performance tonight gives us confidence moving one for the rest of the week."
On Wofford's come-back win last weekend."Yeah it was tough. They have a great crowd. It's a tough place to play, and they have a great coach. For us to fight back like we did, that's what we do, and we try to stay connected. It helped us."
On basketball being a game of runs."We knew the whole first half we were so close to getting a stop or hitting a three or getting a rebound. Our main focus was boxing out.
Tre' McLean,
Greg Pryor,
Eric Robertson and
Dee Oldham did a great job of running them up the line. That's where the run came from. We had to take away their three's."
Chuck Ester, forward, juniorOn 15-0 run after game tied at 53-53."Coach talked to us during the timeout and said we hang our hat on defense, getting stops and rebounding and getting out and running. And we did that. We got stops."
What is your philosophy when you first look toward the basket?"First, I look for the shot. If I don't have it, I look for a pass or drive and just play. Be free."
On everyone making a contribution tonight."We did. We can do that every night any given night against anybody. We have really great players, and we all control the ball. We just need to hang our hat on defense, and we will games."
