Head coach Matt McCallWhat was the difference between the first and second half?"I just felt like our energy at the start of the game wasn't good for whatever reason. We were missing some assignments defensively. And they were getting down the lane, blowing by our guys and getting three's. R.J. White is such a good player that you have to double him in the post. When we went down to double him, we didn't go down there aggressively. We didn't go down there with active hands, and he was able to pick us apart and throw it over the top.
"They got three's off that. We needed to do a much better job. And I think it started with our energy and our effort there. We finally started to get locked in defensively and did a really good job. In the second half, they scored 25 points. They shoot 33 percent from the field, 16 percent from the three point line. We sat down, and we finally started to guard. And that was able to get us on the break and get the game going up and down a little bit.
"I thought the press was good. I really felt like our worst part of the game was the first four minutes. Then, we started to settle in defensively. I think our last 16 minutes of the first half they had 20 points, so basically for 34 minutes in the game they scored 45 points. That's pretty good. That would have had us in the 50s if we didn't have that bad spurt to start the game."
"Winning on the road is not easy. Our guys found a way to win. They were resilient down the stretch. We made plays defensively down the stretch that we needed to. We made free throws down the stretch. It's a great win for us, and we'll move forward."
On UNCG's Marvin Smith starting the game with two three pointers."He's a good shooter. He's a good player. I think in big games especially, he rises to the challenge and wants to play well and can have big nights offensively. I think he had a great game here last year. I was watching on the film last night in the hotel. He played really, really well here last year. He's a talented player. He has great size at the wing spot that can slide him over the floor.
"Those two (three pointers) go down and then Francis Alonso. I told Wes Miller after the game I don't think there's a better freshman in the league right now than him. He's got great confidence, playing with a great swagger about himself. He can really shoot the ball, and he can make great plays off the bounce too. Good team, and it was a good win for us tonight."
On being down and coming back in the game."We kept playing. We didn't lose focus. We kept playing the game, playing the game. I knew eventually we'd make a run. They were playing zone.
Eric Robertson really got it going in the second half. He got some clean looks, and the ball was able to go in the basket. I really felt like, and the stats sheet doesn't totally show it, but I thought
Tre' McLean played an all-around game – rebounding, assists, middle of the zone, making the right play.
"Him and
Greg Pryor at your backcourt, and your backcourt goes for nine assists. You're going to take that every night, 19 on the game and 11 turnovers. Those guys were good in the zone. We were able to find 'E-Rob.' I thought in the second half, our bench gave us a good lift. I thought
Dee Oldham was really good. I thought
Johnathan Burroughs-Cook was good. I thought
Duke Ethridge was good.
"In the second half, it was hard to get Eric out of the game because of his ability to shoot the three. And I wanted Tre' in there because of his ability to make plays in the middle of the floor. But those guys gave us a great lift in the game as well."
On tallying 19 assists against UNCG."You'll take that every night. Our goal is to get 20, and one off the goal there tonight. We had some bad turnovers in the first half. We just weren't playing the game the right way. For whatever it was, we settled in, and we started playing and was able to get a good victory. I walked in there after the game, and I said 'Winning is hard. You guys were prepared to win the game, and you deserved to win the game because of your preparation and enjoy it. Enjoy having success.
"'It's another step along the journey. You're trying to chase something right now, and every single step is going to be difficult. There's no easy steps to a championship. There's none. And you have to take the next step and focus on that step. When you complete that step, be excited about it, and then we'll move onto the next step.'"
Eric Robertson, guard, seniorWhat was the difference between the first and second half?"They got a lot of three's within the first few minutes, and that boosted their first half points. I think in the last 16 minutes we held them to, maybe 20 points in the first half. And in the second half, we made sure we were going hard and going to win the game on the defensive end. If we guard them, we're going to come out and win the game. So in the second half, that was our mindset, and we held them to 25 points."
On UNCG's rebounding performance."That's something we have to work on. They had a bunch of offensive rebounds, and they outrebounded us. They did a good job on the glass. They have some big guys down there."
On having experience getting down in games but pulling out a win."There at the end that's something we talked about as a team. We've been in these situations, and we know how to handle them. That's one thing that we were focusing on in every timeout. It's just understanding that we've been here, and we're not going to panic. Yeah, we're down, but we've been in this situation."
Justin Tuoyo, forward, juniorOn the dynamics of the game."When the game started, they were shooting the three ball at a high rate. They came out five for nine in the first half. We knew we had to get stops. They had us the first four minutes of the first half. Then we settled down, so when the second half came, we just knew what we had to do. We all stuck together and kept fighting. That was a tough, scrappy team, so we had to stay together."
On going down by 10 in the first three minutes of the game."We were down, but we had been there before. We had been down a lot this year, so we knew we had to stay together and grind it out through everything."
On UNCG's performance."We knew it was going to be a battle on the glass. It sucks to see they outrebounded us, but we knew we had to keep fighting regardless. We knew it was going to be battle."
