Postgame Quotes at Furman

Head coach Matt McCall
On not getting enough rebounds or free throws.
"We talked before the game that we needed to out-rebound them. If we out-rebounded them, I felt like we'd give ourselves the best chance in the game. I thought that was the biggest key in the game with how physical they are. We needed to do a better job than we did on the glass and obviously going 9 for 19 on the free throw line, that's just not being focused, not being ready.

"And I take responsibility. I'm the coach. For whatever reason, today we were not ready to play, and a lot of guys kept talking about revenge. And it's not about that. It's about what's going on in today's game and living in the moment right now and playing in the present. Last year's game had nothing to do with today's game, at all. And I almost felt like we got too distracted with that and didn't do our job.

"We just didn't play the right way, didn't play for each other. Nine assists and 20 turnovers, I don't care who you play against, any night you do that you're going to get beat. We played selfish. I thought we took bad shots. The ball didn't move. Give them credit. They were pretty good defensively and taking us out of what we wanted to do. It just didn't feel like we played the right way today."

On the team trying to do too much.
"Nothing good comes out of trying to do it by yourself.  You're going to miss shots. You're going to turn it over. You're going to try to hit homeruns when you should hit singles. It was like that all day. We were trying to make huge plays instead of making a simple play. That gets you beat. There's got to be a different level of focus when you're on the road. You have to be so locked in and so focused on your job, but we were missing assignments.

"We were kind of all over the place. Guys were getting by us, going down the lane. There was no resistance with our defense. Our rotation was bad. We didn't have the necessary focus we needed to win a game like this, against one of the better teams in our league. On the road, you need to have an even better focus."

On Furman getting some easy baskets.
"Rotations were bad. We got out-worked. We got out-played. We got out-coached. We got out-everythinged today. Give them credit. I thought they did a great job. They came ready to play, and for whatever reason, we did not. It's disappointing because this was a great opportunity for our basketball team, and we let one slip away from us today."

On Furman being physical.
"They're a physical basketball team. In the first half, we were getting good looks. We turn it over 20 times and go nine for 19 from the free throw line. My main thing to these guys is can we find ways to win games when things aren't going our way, as they did offensively today. Today was definitely a no. Assignments on defense, we weren't locked into our job. I think we were a little bit distracted, and when you play distracted, you get beat."
