Head coach Matt McCallOn scoring 77 points in the second half."I talked to our guys at the half, especially
Eric Robertson and
Greg Pryor. Those two guys especially, they work so hard on their craft. They're in the gym all day every day, after practice, before practice, shooting three's. Shoot the ball with confidence. Both of those guys were pressing. I'll tell you when to stop shooting.
"We started the second half, they both made two, which kind of got us going a little bit. I give our young guys credit too. I called a timeout there because I wasn't too happy with how they were playing, but I thought they finished the game the right way. It was good. It was good to keep everyone under 30 minutes, get everyone in the game and obviously get another conference win.
"We have a huge week this week, playing three games this week and playing three games next week. The fact that we didn't have to log a lot of minutes with any guy particularly, I was pleased with that as well."
Was the team trying to prove a point tonight?"It was about The Citadel was our next opponent, and they were right in front of us. We needed to do a good job and handle our business and win the game. And that's what we did. I thought it was a business-like win. You go on the road against Samford on Saturday night. There's a human nature element now involved.
"You're coming home. We'll be okay. We're playing in our building. We haven't lost at home. We're going to be okay. When you have that mindset, that's when you get beat. And I didn't feel like we played that way tonight at all. We fought the human nature element of it, played the right way and went out and did our job. I really felt like it was a business-like win."
On Tre' McLean's performance."I wouldn't trade that kid for the world. He is a joy to coach every day, as all these guys are. He wears his emotions on his sleeve. He brings it every single day. He works so hard, and this team and this program is so important to him. Again, I feel blessed with the opportunity to coach him, as well as all these guys every single day. I would not trade
Tre' McLean for the world."
On scoring 125 points."I know it'd make my former boss (Billy Donovan) happy. He always use to turn to me and say 'I want 100.' My wife reminded me of that tonight. It's kind of how they play. They run around and trap. They put us back on our heels. Give them credit to start the game, they came out one-three-one. They hadn't done much of that. You're thinking they're going to press the whole game.
"Some of that had to do with Warren Sledge and Quayson Williams being out I'm sure. Again, it's a sign of our guys being unselfish, handling their pressure. We got to the free throw line. We made our free throws, which I think was a huge key to the game. To shoot 47 free throws, I don't know if I've ever been a part of a game shooting that many free throws. But it's how they play, try to get out and deny. That obviously had a large part of why we scored so many points."
Do you ever take a moment in the game and think about how well the team is doing?"It's all about the process, the process of getting better every single day. Again, I thought we were fortunate tonight to not have to play our top eight guys an enormous amount of minutes and be able to get everybody in there. Because this stretch we're getting ready to go on here is like no stretch I've ever seen, playing Thursday, Saturday, Monday, Thursday, Saturday.
"I've never even heard of that, so we have to keep our guys fresh right now. And it's a one-game season. The only game that matters now is the one Thursday. We'll approach it that way and get back to work tomorrow."
On Duke Ethridge and Dee Oldham's performance."Duke was everywhere. Dee is a guy that brings it every day with his energy. He's one of our leaders from that standpoint. He's the same guy every day. I give Dee an enormous amount of credit because of everything he's been through as a player. To get to this point and put the team first, because
Dee Oldham and
Duke Ethridge, both those guys would be starting in a lot of different places in the Southern Conference.
"They're completely selfless right now in putting our team first and coming off the bench and doing a great job in their roles. I give both those kids a lot of credit for that. Because it'd be easier to think about yourself and think you should be playing more and you should be starting, and they don't do that. They put their team first. That's what makes a really good team. They play the game for each other, and they play the right way."
Tre' McLean, forward, juniorHow good did the win feel tonight?"It's just another win, just another opponent. We're trying to win the championship. It's not about me or somebody else. One team, we're on a mission here. We're a family. We all want to win. We all have one goal, so it's just another good win."
Are you glad to have this game behind you?"I just take every opponent the same, come in with seriousness. It isn't really about me or how I feel, or my relationship with someone else on the opposing side. It's about my teammates, my brothers, my coaches, my family and it was a good team win."
Did it take you and the team a while to get into the flow of the game?"Yes, we had one day to prepare, but we prepared a lot for the press. They came out on a one-three-one, and it kind of changed the game. I think we had to adjust our game plan. Around the eight-minute mark, that's when we got the flow of the game, the feel of the game, and we were able to make some plays."
Was there anything said at half time?"It's the same message we've had every year at half time – keep pushing, keep taking steps, keep taking strides and we're going to see where we're at by the end of the night. Keep playing team basketball, and don't lose focus."
Dee Oldham, guard, seniorHow good did it feel tonight?
"I think our coaches did a good job getting us prepared for this game, especially considering we only had one day. It's another win, another conference game. We have another one Thursday – enjoy it but we have to move on tomorrow."
Did you ever look at the scoreboard and think 'WOW'?"Yes, I mean we started executing and we opened up a little bit. When you play the right way and play together, things like that tend to happen. As fast as that lead opened up, it could have closed just as fast. Coach kept preaching to keep doing what we did to get this lead."
Was it an exhilarating game?"For sure, it's always good to see everybody get a piece of the cake. Everybody works hard every day. It's always good to see that."
What's changed over the last couple of weeks for you?"That's tough to answer. I guess kind of having a reality check on myself and figuring out where I can help this team the most. If that's being that huge energy guy, doing that to the fullest or whatever that was.
"I think what I came to the conclusion was that I can get my guys going by being a spark, by getting my guys going by getting myself going. That helps the team in the bigger picture. I just had to do that to the fullest."
