2015-16 Chattanooga Mocs BasketballPost-Game QuotesFeb. 20, 2016 – UNCG – Chattanooga, Tenn. – McKenzie ArenaÂ
Coach Matt McCallWould you rather it now than early March:"No question, I think anybody would. We need to utilize this week of practice to get better. For them to come in our building and shoot 67% and we give up 79 points. I don't remember them missing in the second half to be honest with you. We tried man, we tried zone, the only thing we didn't try to do was double the post, which we should have done all game. We wanted to do that, and we didn't do it. That's something we need to work on here in case we see these guys again for sure."
Â
On R.J. White's performance:"We didn't double him one time, not one time. I don't ever remember going down there or even digging in the post. We worked on that yesterday in practice and for some reason, we didn't do it a single time tonight. That was the difference in the game. You can't put that guy on an island; he's too good. You have to double him, and you have to make it difficult for them in the game. It was so easy for him tonight when he goes 11 for 12 with 26 points. We had no answer for Diante Baldwin either. He kept blowing by us. We kept blowing pick-and-roll coverages. All we did yesterday was work on doubling the post and pick-and-roll coverage. We did a poor job doing both of those things today."
Â
Dee Oldham, Sr.-GDo you think not being focus was part of the issue:"I agree with that. Preparation has something to do with tonight. Hats off to Greensboro, they came in and played a good game. I agree with that statement that Coach McCall made."
Â
Is it a sense of relief that you can focus on next week's game:"Even though with the way we played tonight, we still have a chance to accomplish what we were trying to accomplish at the beginning of the year which is win a championship. Coach has got a rule, after we take a loss, for that day, that night, however long that is you can be upset whatever it is, but the next day you have to move forward. It's a relief yes, but we still have business to take care of."
Â
Chuck Ester, Jr.-FDo you think not being focus was part of the issue:"I think that's the problem; we weren't focused at all. We got out-played. Going back to preparation, yesterday we went over doubling the post and trapping, but tonight we didn't do that. We weren't focused."
Â
UNCG Coach Wes MillerOpening statement:"It's a big win for us obviously. The first thing, tip your hat to Matt and the job he's done this year, the year that he's having and the team that they are. We knew that it would be a difficult one for us and that makes it a difficult one for our program. So the reason it's big is because of the job he's done and the kind of team that they are.
Â
"Nonetheless I thought it was a big win for us. I thought RJ White was just terrific. He got it going early on the offensive glass, got some easy ones and then he made some tougher ones late. We thought he could be pretty good all year and he's been great on some nights, he's been good on some nights, and he was great tonight. I hope it's something he can build on going forward.Â
Â
"I thought Diante Baldwin getting downhill for us tonight was big key. He really set a tone early in the game of getting the ball downhill to the paint and made some nice kick outs; also had some nice finishes. Then again I thought it was a full team effort for us. But a big win for our program and hopefully something we can build some momentum on moving into the final weekend of the year here."
Â
What did you see that changed the second time around:"They doubled in the first meeting. (White) had some nice plays out of the double the first time around, but it took away his ability to really score. I thought he did a much better job a working for position. Even if they were to have doubled, he got some catches early in the open floor; that type of thing. When they didn't double, it gave him more opportunities as well. The other thing was his baskets weren't all in the post. A lot of his baskets came on offensive rebounds and drop offs. He had the three tonight on the pick-and-pop. So he got more baskets for him in unconventional ways and that's something that we want to build on."
