Head coach Matt McCallOn being outright regular season Southern Conference Champions."It's big. There's a lot of places in the country that have to share it. These guys deserve it. They deserve to win it outright. They handled their business for the most part for 15 games this year. They beat the best teams in the league twice with the exception of Furman – beat ETSU twice, beat Wofford twice, beat Mercer twice.
"They handled their business. And this chapter's done. This part of the season is finished. It's on to a new one. Obviously there's a lot we can take from tonight. There's a lot we can learn from having a 10-point lead with two minutes to go. We did not shoot a high percentage at the free throw line by any means.
"There's so much we can learn from and teach from because we're going to be in these situations next weekend. We're going to be in these situations a lot. We could be up six with a minute to go or up 10 with two minutes to go or down six with a minute to go. We need to work on this, and really looking forward to putting our guys in situations like this in practice the next couple days of practice."
On being down early in the second half, but stopping them for five minutes."I think we've learned from the standpoint, against UNCG we got down and we stayed down. Against Western Carolina, we got down and we stayed down. I kept telling these guys this is going to be a close game. All their games in this building have been close this year.
"I don't care who they played. They've all been close. They beat UNCG here. It was going to be a close game. We had to stay the course and couldn't flinch. And they did that. It would have been easy to flinch down eight. And we didn't do that, just proud of this group."
On Tre' McLean's performance."He impacts the game in so many ways. He's so valuable to our team. His focus level is so important for our team. When he is locked in and focused on everything he has to do, our team is at a different level. And that's a lot for him to shoulder. But that's the truth.
"He's earned that with his work ethic. He's earned that with his approach all year long. He's obviously had a tremendous amount of success, and sometimes that can be difficult to handle. He's handled it the right away. He's always continued to put this team first, and I couldn't be more proud of him."
Dee Oldham, guard, seniorOn a tough win to outright clinch the regular season SoCon title."None of them are going to be easy. You can't come into the games having expectations. We have a target on our back and each game teams are going to give us their best shot. And that's what we got tonight. We got VMI's best shot."
On VMI's QJ Peterson."He's tough. He's a tough player. We knew that coming into the game. We knew he'd get going. We tried out best to keep him out of the game, but it was hard. It's hard to keep a guy like that down. He was letting them go, and they were falling."
On winning the rebounding game."I think we did a great job early when shots weren't falling on getting stops. Defensively, we had to hang our hats on that. They came out firing, so we had to buckle down defensively."
Tre' McLean, forward, juniorThoughts on outright clinching SoCon regular season title."It's a great feeling, the journey that started when Coach McCall got here. It feels great to be able to do something great for the city of Chattanooga, for the fans and for each other. It's just a great feeling."
On being down early in the first but not letting the Keydets score for five minutes."It's all about giving your all. We knew that this last half right here, this is all we have for the rest of the regular season. This is all we have to give to win the SoCon outright, so put it all on the line. Whatever you had going on before, you have to block it out for a bigger purpose. We were able to do that."
On getting the tip out to Chuck Ester after a missed free throw near the end of the game."I was just playing hard, trying to make a play. This is all we had to do to win it outright. We didn't want to share it. We knew what we put into it. We were just putting it all on the line. We can rest tomorrow. I was just able to get my hand on the ball."
