Head coach Tom Arth announced his first signing class at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga today.  The Mocs hauled in 21 signees that compose one of the top groups of incoming talent in the Football Championship Subdivision.
"I am very excited about our class," stated Arth, who became Chattanooga's 23rd head coach on Dec. 19, 2016.  "I'm so proud of our staff and how hard they worked. We had a very short amount of time to put together an incredible group of student-athletes.

"This class has players from four state championship programs, eight all-state performers and eight with academic honors.  Not only are they going to do well on the field, but they are also going to represent UTC the right way in the classroom and in the community."

Arth and his staff had a balanced approach to recruiting, signing 10 players on offense, 10 on defense and one specialist.  There are nine from Tennessee, six from Georgia, four from Florida and two from Alabama.

The nine from the Volunteer state equal the most in one class over the last 10 years.  There are also four from the Chattanooga area, equaling the most local talent UTC has welcomed in one group in the last six years.

Starting off are two who are already on campus.  Sophomore Nick Tiano is a quarterback who transferred from Mississippi State, while freshman offensive lineman Dakota Davis enrolled early this semester.  Tiano is a former three-star quarterback from Chattanooga's Baylor School, and Davis is a two-star prospect from Knoxville's Bearden High School.

All totaled, the Mocs signed 10 newcomers with at least a two-star rating, tying for the second-most in one class on record.  In addition to Tiano's three-star rating during his prep days, offensive lineman McClendon Curtis (6-7, 310) of Chattanooga's Central High School carries the same lofty rating.

Others with two-stars include Davis, Chris Broadwater (RB – Tucker, Ga.), Cole Copeland (QB – Cleveland, Tenn.), Brandon Dowdell (DB, Cordele, Ga.), Jordan Ferguson (WR – Knoxville, Tenn.), Jabril Malone (DB – Memphis, Tenn.), Bryce Nunnelly (WR – Cleveland, Tenn.) and Jeffrey Wood II (WR – Knoxville, Tenn.).

For the fourth year in a row, at least 10 members of the class had FBS offers before choosing the Mocs.  Also, for the ninth year in a row, at least eight student-athletes earned academic honors to go along with their impressive athletic credentials.

There are four state champions headed to Chattanooga, tying for the most in a single year.  These include Malone, Wood, Zach Feaster (LB – Opelika, Ala.) and Devonnsha Maxwell (DL – Valdosta, Ga.).

The rest consists of a talented group that includes Parker Mallett (TE – Tyrone, Ga.), C.J. Winston (LB – Gadsden, Ala.), Jamal Thomas (DB – Cairo, Ga.), D.J. Jackson (DB – Fort White, Fla.), Jahsari Patterson (LB – Cairo, Ga.), Jacob Bailey (K – Mt. Juliet, Tenn.), Ronnie Collins (Lake City, Fla.) Demond Ross (Panama City, Fla.) and Demyan Ross (Panama City, Fla.).

"We feel like there are a lot of players that can come to Chattanooga and play football," added Arth.  "They have that type of talent, but very few that have everything else. Those are the things that are important to us. In terms of the way they carry themselves, the relationships that they've built with their high schools, and the way that they interact in the community."
