Russ Schoene led the led the Mocs to two-straight Southern Conference titles and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1982.  As a senior, he averaged 13.6 points and led the team with 7.0 rebounds a game.

Schoene led the Mocs to a 21-9 record, 11-5 in SoCon play, and their first NCAA Tournament in 1981.  A second team All-SoCon selection in 1982, he guided UTC to a 27-4 record while and another SoCon title, while earning SoCon Tournament MVP Honors.

That UTC team claimed its first NCAA Tournament win with a convincing 58-51 victory over N.C. State.  Schoene scored 15 and led the team with seven boards.  He had 20 points in a one-point loss to Minnesota in the second round. 

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Schoene in the second round of the 1982 NBA draft (45th pick overall), at the time highest draft pick in school history.  He went on to play five seasons in the NBA with Philadelphia (1982-83), Indiana (1982-83) and Seattle (1987-89).
