Former UTC Head Coach Tommy Bartlett was inducted into the ITA Men’s Tennis Collegiate Hall of Fame in 1993.  He guided the Mocs tennis program from 1979 to 1990.

The most noticeable accomplishments under Bartlett were the women’s three consecutive NCAA Division II National Championships from 1983-85. The women’s team also won Southern Conference titles in 1984-86, 1988 and 1990.  

Bartlett guided the men’s tennis squad to six-straight SoCon Championships from 1980-85, as well as league titles in 1988 and 1989.  Under Bartlett’s guidance, Sue McCulloch (1985), Scott Zaccaria and Orlando Lourenco all earned SoCon Player of the Year honors. Lori Massengill, Pam Yates, Sue McCulloch, Christine Picher and Heidi Narborough all earned All-American honors while Bartlett was coaching UTC.

Bartlett was named the National Coach of the Year in 1986 and the SoCon Women’s Coach of the Year in 1986 and 1990. On the men’s side, he earned SoCon Coach of the Honors seven times, including 1980-83, 1985 and 1988-89.

Prior to coaching tennis at UTC, Bartlett was also a well-known and very successful college basketball coach.  His stops included Carson-Newman (1957-58), Chattanooga (1959-62), an assistant coach at Tennessee (1963-66) and head coach at Florida (1967-73).  He was also the head men’s tennis coach at Tennessee, winning the SEC Title in 1966.
