Walter “Moose” McGary was an All-American for the Mocs from 1972-74. He averaged 16.2 ppg as a senior, earning first team NCAA Division II All-American honors from the NABC and second team recognition from the Associated Press.
In his three-year career, McGary scored 1,445 points (18.3 ppg) and grabbed 940 rebounds (11.9 rpg) in 79 games. His 584 points and 22.7 ppg in 1971-72 were school records at the time.
The 6-7 forward from Western High School in Birmingham, Ala., also posted a then-school-record 347 rebounds in 1972-73. He was drafted in the eighth round of the 1973 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, but returned to school to finish his degree. He was taken in the 10th round in 1974 by the New Orleans Jazz.
In his three seasons at UTC, the Mocs went 53-27 and appeared in two NCAA Division II tournaments. UTC also had its first 20-win season (21-5 in 1973-74).
