UTC Women's Tennis 1978 AIAW Small College National Champions include Elizabeth Sharp, Julie Dunn, Kathy Kolankiewicz, Phyllis Blackwell, Coach Alice Tym, Susan Carson and Sue Turberville.
June 10, 1978 – Santa Barbara, Calif. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team captured its second-straight Association of Intercollege Athletics for Women national championship in Santa Barbara, Calif., today. The Moccasins won the three singles and two doubles titles to outpace the College of Charleston at the AIAW Small College Tournament.
Head coach Alice Tym led UTC to 73.5 points in the event hosted by Westmont College.
Elizabeth Sharp,
Kathy Kolankiewicz and
Julie Dunn all won individual trophies.
Sharp defeated the College of Charleston's Pam Mitchell (6-3, 6-4) in the finals of the No. 2 flight. Kolankiewicz came out on top against Dartmouth's Allison Hibbert (6-2, 6-4) at No. 4, and Dunn beat Stetson's Patty Nagle in three sets at No. 6 (6-2, 3-6, 6-2).
The Mocs only loss in the finals came at No. 1. The Cougars' Diane Gilruth scored a three-set win over
Phyllis Blackwell (6-4, 5-7, 6-4).
Blackwell didn't come away emptied handed. She teamed with Sharp to win the No. 1 double crown. Dunn and
Susan Carson won the No. 3 title for the Moccasins.
UTC was followed in the team race by the College of Charleston's 62 points. Stetson was third with 52.5, while Dartmouth (51.5) and Cal State Bakersfield (37.5) rounded out the top 5.
