The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team captured its first NCAA Division II National Championship in Pomona, Calif., this week.  The Mocs scored wins over host Cal Poly, Northern Colorado and UC Davis on their way to the team championship.

UTC opened the dual tournament with a 9-0 sweep of Cal Poly on their home courts.  The No. 1 match was the only one that went to three sets on the day.  Pam Yates pulled out a (7-5, 3-6, 6-2) against Laurie Moss to complete the shutout. 

The Mocs were almost as impressive in their 7-2 semifinal win over Northern Colorado the following day.  UTC took five of six in singles and two of three in doubles to advance to the finals.

The finals against UC Davis was a battle up and down the lineup.  The Aggies took the upper hand by winning four of six singles.  UTC's Sue McCulloch and Susan Bednar kept the Mocs alive with wins at No. 4 and No. 6 respectively. 

Trialing 4-2, Chattanooga needed to sweep the doubles to get the win.  Yates and Christine Picher had a tough time in the first set before blowing through the second on their way to a (7-5, 6-1) win over Helen Nazar and Sally Garbeff.

After that, McCulloch and Sabine ter Reit scored a (6-3, 6-4) win over Thea Uota and Maria Newton at No. 2.  Cathy Tanzini and Lori Massengill clinched the win with a (6-4, 6-4) win over Ursula Donofrio and Marianne Martin (UCD) at No. 3. 

Following the team dual, Yates and McCulloch competed in the individual tournament with both losing in the early rounds.  Yates and Picher advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles event before falling.
