The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team won its second-straight NCAA Division II National Championship on its home courts at the Manker Patten Tennis Center in Chattanooga.  In addition to the team title, Sue McCulloch and Christine Picher won the doubles tournament.
The team championship was determined by a dual tournament that included Chattanooga, UC Davis, Denver, Morehead State, Notre Dame, Radford, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Stetson.

In the quarterfinals, the Mocs breezed to a 9-0 win over Radford.  Only one of the matches was pushed to three sets with Picher winning (6-1, 4-6, 6-3) over Susan Shoemaker at No. 3.

The semifinals were a battle, with the Mocs claiming a 6-3 win over Notre Dame. This one was much closer than the final score indicated.  Picher, Pam Yates and Heidi Narborough all posted wins in singles action, but the score was tied 3-3 heading into the doubles.

Doubles play has always been a strength for the Mocs, but they were tested in each of the three matches by the Irish.  All three went three sets, while four of the nine need seven games to win. In the end, Chattanooga won the final frame in each to win all three doubles contests.

The Mocs went up against SIUE in the finals.  Picher, Yates and Narborough remained undefeated on the week with wins in singles action.  Lori Massengill and Cathy Tanzini also won at No. 5 and No. 6 to clinch the team win before doubles began. 

The Mocs continued to their dominance in doubles, sweeping the last three matches for an 8-1 victory. 

Chattanooga also faired well in the individual singles and doubles tournaments that took place after the team duals.  McCulloch advanced to the semifinals as the No. 4 seed in singles.  She lost to eventual champion and top-seeded Elisabeth Calendar of SIUE.  McCulloch won the first set in the semis but dropped the last two (3-6, 6-4, 6-3).

Yates and Massengill made up the top-seeded tandem in the doubles tournament, with McCulloch and Picher also competing in the 16-team field. Yates and Massengill cruised into the finals, winning their three matches in straight sets. 

McCulloch and Picher also won three matches in straight sets, but had to be two seeded duos to get to the championship match.  The opened with a (6-1, 6-4) win against Notre Dame's #3-seed Mary Colligan/Pam Fishette. After a win in the quarters against Northern Colorado, McCulloch and Picher took down second-seeded Elisabeth Calendar and Monica Briddle of SIUE (6-1, 6-4).

That set up an all-UTC final. This one went three sets with McCulloch and Picher coming out on top (3-6, 6-0, 6-2).
