The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team made it three NCAA Division II National Championships in a row with an 8-1 win over Notre Dame in Bakersfield, Calif., this week. 

Competing in the eight-team dual field were the Mocs, Fighting Irish, Abilene Christian, Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Central Connecticut State, Morehead State and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.

UTC's toughest test in the tournament came in the quarterfinals against the Matadors.  The Mocs only lost four matches all week, but two were in the 7-2 win over Cal State Northridge.

The semifinals were a rematch of last year's finals with UTC facing SIUE.  The score was the same as Chattanooga pulled out an 8-1 win over the Cougars. 

The finals put UTC up against Notre Dame, who they had beaten 6-3 in last year's semis.  The Mocs clinched the win early by taking five of the six singles.  The Irish scored their lone point at No. 2 when Mary Colligan beat Pam Yates in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 7-5).

Lori Massengill was the only other Moc to be pushed three sets.  She defeated Isobel O'Bren (6-4, 5-7, 6-3) at No. 6. UTC went on to sweep doubles play.  Yates and Massengill had to go three sets at No. 2 to score the point against Colligan and Lisa LaFratta (0-6, 6-1, 7-5).

Chattanooga was 9-0 in doubles at the 1985 championships.  In three years at the NCAA Division II National Championships, UTC posted a 26-1 mark in doubles in dual competition.   

Chattanooga also competed in the individual tournament that took place after the team event.  Yates and Sue McCulloch competed in singles, while McCulloch and Christine Picher and Yates-Massengill were the Mocs' doubles entrants.

Seeded third, McCulloch made her second-straight appearance in the semifinals.  There she lost to second seed Maria Newton of UC Davis. Yates won her opening match before falling to seventh-seeded Kathy Federicci of Georgetown (5-7, 6-4, 6-3).

After meeting in an all-UTC doubles finals a year ago, the Chattanooga tandems of McCulloch-Picher and Yates-Massengill were seeded first and third in this year's tournament, respectively. 
McCulloch-Picher advanced to the semifinals where they battled in a very close match against Northern Colorado's Saundra Elliott and Nancy Roe.  The fourth-seeded Bears duo eventually won in three sets (5-7, 7-5, 7-6).

Yates and Massengill won their first match but fell in the quarterfinals to Stephen F. Austin's Carolyn Clarke and Biljana Mirkovic in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-3).
