Lady Mocs Survive Second Half Surge; Defeat Mountaineers 68-55

BOONE, N.C. ? Chattanooga withstood a late second half rally by Appalachian State to hold on and claim a 68-55 Southern Conference win over the Mountaineers at the Holmes Convocation Center Saturday afternoon.

Alex Anderson hit back-to-back free throws followed by a layup to put Chattanooga 48-33 with 12:58 to play in the game, but the Mountaineers would come charging back to close the gap.

Whitney Randolph's layup 10 seconds later sparked a 12-0 run that put Appalachian State to within three of the Lady Mocs with 9:31 to play. Chattanooga pushed the lead back up to five twice, but a layup from Whitney Tossie at the 7:03 mark knotted the game at 52-52.

That would be all the Mountaineers could muster as Chattanooga held ASU to just three points the remainder of the game and put another 14 on the board for the win. Alex Anderson led all scorers with 25 points and 11 rebounds. She moves to sixth all-time on the Lady Mocs scoring charts surpassing Damita Bullock, Tiffani Roberson and Julie Copeland. She also passed Denise Powers on the rebounding charts moving up to fifth on the career charts.

Jenaya Wade-Fray tossed in 15 points hitting a trio of 3-pointers and pulled down seven rebounds. Shanara Hollinquest went 5-for-5 from the free throw line for nine points and seven rebounds while Brooke Hand nailed three 3-pointers in the second half for nine points.

Chattanooga (11-3, 3-0 SoCon) won the rebound battle 40-34 and had 20 offensive boards and scored 23 second half points. The Lady Mocs went 17-for-21 from the free throw line and Anderson made a career-high nine from the charity stripe.

Appalachian State's (2-11, 0-3 SoCon) Whitney Tossie and Sam Ramirez combined for 10 second half points to get ASU to within eight five minutes into the half. Tossie led the Mountaineers with 10 points and five assists while Ramirez had eight points on the day. Whitney Randolph had a team-high seven boards and Frances Hernandez scored nine for the Mountaineers.
