10/9/2010 6:14:00 PM | Women's Golf
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team improved in round two but remains in eighth place heading into the final round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship at Holston Hills Country Club. Chattanooga's five-over par 293 is the team's low round of the young season.
Host Tennessee stands at 12-under par 564 with a comfortable 20-stroke lead over TCU in second at 584. Nine shots separate the Horned Frogs in second and the Mocs in eighth.
UTC started strong making the turn at one-under par with Emma de Groot (Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia) and Maria Juliana Loza (Bucaramanga, Colombia) at minus one each. Christine Wolf (Igls, Austria) was even and Jordan Britt (Dayton, Tenn.) just plus one through nine.
Holes 10-12 proved costly again today for the Mocs as they quickly dropped six shots over the three holes. Much like round one, Chattanooga rallied late playing the final two holes, both par fives, at five under to position itself for a Sunday move up the leaderboard.
Loza was the big story for the Mocs today tying her career-best round with a 69 (-3). She carded four birdies and 13 pars with a bogey serving as the lone blemish. She is tied for 13th at 145 (+1), one stroke behind de Groot who is tied for ninth after a second 72 (E) put her at level par 144.
Wolf matched her first round 73 (+1) and is tied for 16th at 146 (+2). Freshman Yushira Budhram (Johannesburg, South Africa) shot a second 79, and is at 158. She tallied birdies on three of her final four holes to round out the team scoring. Britt had the drop score of 80 and is a shot behind at 159.
Tennessee's Erica Popson's continues to lead individually at 136 (-8) after a 69 today. Natalie Gleadall (Ole Miss) and Sara Monberg (Tennessee) are two shots back at 138.
The Mocs are paired with Furman and Georgia State in Sunday's final round. Britt starts UTC off No. 1 at 9 a.m., followed by Budhram (9:09), Loza (9:18), Wolf (9:27) and de Groot (9:36).
