Chattanooga Basketball - Postgame Quotes
UNC Greensboro at Chattanooga
McKenzie Arena - Chattanooga, Tenn.
Feb. 1, 2010
Head Coach Wes Moore
Opening Statement:
"I'm really pleased with the way we've played the last few games. We're getting a lot of people involved now. Before it was Shanara and Jenaya and that was about it. Now you've got Michelle Davis heating up and Megan [Rollins] is shooting it well. Kayla's been shooting it well for quite a while. I thought Megan Rollins had one of her best games. She was a lot more active and she looked fresh. It was a great night. It's fun to be on the sidelines on a night like this."
On making so many three-pointers:
"It's easier and it makes your life a lot better when they are going down. When we can get everybody involved, there's no doubt that's the difference in our team right now. The last two games we've had more assists than turnovers and that's a good thing for us."
On the run UNCG made in the first half:
"We had a good little cushion then they knocked down a couple of threes. Nothing comes easy. We still haven't gotten that elusive 20-point win. I'm hard to please but we've done a pretty nice job the past few games. We've got about a month left before tournament time so hopefully we can continue to get better and clean up some things."
On the turnaround from the early season struggle?
"You're playing some tough opponents. Part of it too is we're counting on four freshmen. We're playing well as a team right now."
On the key to the recent success:
"The balance. We did change our defensive philosophy. We're trying to put on a little more pressure. I know you couldn't tell it in stretches out there, but in the first half early in the game, we had ten steals at halftime. We were dead last in the conference in steals and we're trying to dig our way out now by playing a little more aggressive man-to-man defense now. We hope its fun to watch too. Now we're trying to be a little more aggressive and make some plays. I think that helps us offensively too.
"We just seemed so sluggish. We didn't' have any energy. We needed to give ourselves a jumpstart. I don't know if we have the quickness, but overall it's helping us."
On the winning streak:
"I don't look at streaks. I don't know our record right now. I'm worried about how we're playing and what we're doing to get better. I've been disappointed this week because we had two great practices early in the week then we had two poor ones later in the week. I was about to pull my hair out because this team sometimes doesn't have the energy and passion that I do. But I can't argue with tonight. We've got to just try and focus on getting better every day."
Senior Shanara Hollinquest
On her teammates opening up lanes
"They opened up a lot because [Greensboro] didn't double at all tonight, it was actually one-on-one."
On big back-to-back wins
"It's great because we actually sit on the bench and laugh without being a nervous wreck. We still have to get Coach [Moore] to sit down. I don't know when that is going to happen, probably not until a 20-plus win. We are still working on that."
On the difference in the team at the beginning of the winning streak
"We are clicking on offense and defense. Mainly, our defense has picked up and that is leading us into our offensive game. That is a big plus for us. We have a lot of confidence but our coach won't let us get the 'big head' and that is always good. We enjoy the win for a little bit, but then it is back to the film room to prepare for the next game."
Freshman Michelle Davis
On team's ability to shoot the three
"I think we are on a roll. This time of the season, everything is paying off and we are just having fun. I think I am finally just relaxing and letting the game come to me."
On team's success against UNC Greensboro tonight
"I think we just had fun. Everyone was hitting their shots and making the plays. It was a fun environment to play in."
