
Gietema Earns All-Conference Honors at Track Day One

BOONE, N.C. --- Junior Tara Gietema claimed all-conference honors for the third straight year with a third place finish in the 10,000 meter run at the 2010 Southern Conference Championships hosted by Appalachian State University at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Gietema, of Knoxville, Tenn., finished the race with a time of 38:12.13, just 10 seconds off her personal best time. She was third last year in the 5,000 meter run and placed second in the 10,000m as a freshman. Elon's Caitlin Beeler won the event with a time of 37:27.13 followed by Davidson's Natalie Atabek with a time of 37:51.68.
Sophomore Emmanuel Kirwa (Kapsabet, Kenya) just missed all-conference honors with a fourth place finish in his first 3000 meter Steeplechase. He completed the course in a time of 9:28.43. Samford took the top two spots in the event led by Cameron Bean's 19:10.00.
Freshman Mark Cole(McKenzie, Tenn.) took fifth in the men's 10,000m finals with a time of 32:06.49. Appalachian State's Phillip Mitchell placed first with a top time of 31:32.42.
Junior Monika Groppe (Germantown, Tenn.) finished 12th in her first 3,000m Steeplechase with a time of 13:05.28. Samford's Hilary Neal took the first place in the race followed by Elon's Emily Fournier and College of Charleston's Kristen Wolfe.
In the preliminary races, senior Anneli Uys (Somerville, Australia) placed first in the 800m with a time of 2:12.57, nearly four seconds off her school record pace set last year of 2:08.99. Michah Wessinger of The Citadel was two seconds behind in second followed by Furman's Monique Ositelu with a time of 2:15.42.
Freshman Blake Olson (Pleasant View, Tenn.) placed seventh overall in the 400m Hurdles with a personal record time of 55.81 in the second heat. Western Carolina's Cordell Livingston, also running in the second heat, finished with the top time on the day, 54.55.
In the men's 800m, senior David Moore (Sarnia, Ontario) finished third in the second heat and seventh overall to earn a spot in the Sunday finals of the event with a time of 1:53.93. Moore, who spent the last few weeks recovering from a swipe by a car during training this season, bested his personal record time clocked at the Emory Invitational by nearly two seconds.
The championships will wrap up Sunday at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Results will be available at GoMocs.com following the event. Live scoring is not available due to a technical issue.
