CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- On a perfect September Scenic City afternoon, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga could not hold on to an early advantage falling 42-41 to No. 3 Appalachian State at Finley Stadium in front of 15,235 fans, the second largest UTC crowd ever. Chattanooga (0-1/0-1) led by 21 points early in the fourth quarter only to see ASU (1-0/1-0) storm back for the early Southern Conference victory.

A 16-yard B.J. Coleman touchdown strike to Garrett Hughes with 14:54 to play in the game gave the Mocs a 35-14 advantage capping a three play, 77-yard drive that quickly answered App State's score with 1:17 to go in the third quarter to get within two touchdowns.

Appalachian then scored 28 unanswered points in the span of 8:49 of game clock. It started with a Cedric Baker three-yard scamper to cut the Mocs' margin to 35-21 as the Mountaineers drive lasted just 1:03 going three plays and 77 yards.

Chattanooga fumbled the ensuing kickoff as all-conference defensive back Buster Skrine was injured after returning the ball 26 yards to the 36 with App State recovering and returning to the 33. It would take just three plays and 1:33 for the Mountaineers to cash in on a four-yard DeAndre Presley rush to cut the margin to a single touchdown.

Misfortune would continue to plague the Mocs on their next possession. On third and 16 from the UTC 11 yard line, Coleman was sacked by Jabari Fletcher causing a fumble that Fletcher recovered at the seven. Baker scored on the next play knotting the score at 35-all.

After Chattanooga went three-and-out, App State responded again going 61 yards in five plays and scoring on the wildest play of the game. Presley hit Matt Cline on the right sideline for an apparent two-yard loss when Cline fumbled.

Presley picked up the fumble and scampered 33 yards for the score to take its first lead, 42-35 with 6:05 remaining. The Mocs would not fold.

With 2:56 left in the game and the Mocs on their own 14-yard line, Coleman methodically led his team down the field. He completed passes to three different receivers while the team got a big third-down conversion on a J.J. Jackson nine-yard run early in the drive.

At the ASU 24, Coleman hit sophomore wideout Brian Sutherland for 21 yards to the three yard line. After two incompletions, Coleman bulled his way into the end zone to make it 42-41 with just under one minute left. After the Mocs marched 86 yards in 11 plays, head coach Russ Huesman decided to go for two, but Coleman's pass attempt was broken up and the Mountaineers escaped with the one-point win.

The need to go for two was the most heartbreaking part of the day for UTC. Mocs' kickers missed three extra-point attempts on the afternoon. Even so, it was a great show in front of the 15,000-plus in attendance.

Chattanooga got off to a fast start scoring on its first four possessions. A 29-yard Mike Hammons field goal opened the proceedings for the Mocs followed by an electrifying 53-yard pass and catch touchdown for Chris Pitchford from Coleman making it 9-0.

Presley got the Mountaineers on the board with a two-yard run to cut the lead to 9-7. That led to 19 consecutive points for the Mocs.

Coleman hit Joel Bradford for 36 yards with 21 seconds remaining in the first quarter running the score to 16-7 in favor of the Mocs. Coleman's one-yard run with 11:29 left in the opening half pushed the Mocs to a 22-7 advantage.

Huesman went into his bag of tricks for the final tally of the second quarter. Sophomore tailback Chris Awuah, a high school quarterback, appeared to run left before pulling up to complete his first collegiate pass for a nine-yard scoring strike to redshirt freshman Marlon Anthony, his first career score. That gave the Mocs a 28-7 lead heading into the break.

Coleman completed 23 of 37 passes for 340 yards and three scores. He hit six different targets including three separate touchdown connections. He found three different receivers five or more times.

Hughes led the Mocs with six receptions for 78 yards, while Bradford and Sutherland each caught five balls for 85 yards. Sutherland had 239 all-purpose yards with 95 rushing, four carries, and 59 yards on three kick returns. Senior Chris Pitchford also had 85 receiving yards on three catches to go with his score.

Presley also had 340 passing yards on 22-29 with two scores. He recorded two rushing TDs as well with 25 yards on 11 totes. Cline, eight catches for 89 yards, and Brian Quick, five for 121, were his favorite targets on the afternoon.

Baker had 44 yards on the ground on 13 rushes to go with his two scores. Devin Radford led all rushers with 85 yards, 10 carries.

Junior safety Chris Lewis-Harris led all tacklers for the Mocs with nine tackles forcing a fumble while recovering another. Fellow junior safety Jordan Tippit had eight tackles and a forced fumble, while junior linebacker Ryan Consiglio added seven stops.

Jeremy Kimbrough led the Mountaineers with eight tackles. Fletcher was a disruptive force with just three tackles, but two were sacks as he forced a fumble and recovered two as well.

The two teams combined to amass 978 yards of total offense, 492 by the Mocs compared to 486 for App State. Chattanooga had 349 in the air and 143 on the ground. The Mountaineers tossed for 340 yards while rushing for 146.

The Mocs overcame a slow start on the ground. After nine carries, UTC had just 12 rushing yards. In the next 20 rushes, the Mocs ran for 131 yards. Sutherland's 95 yards led the team, while Jackson added 49 yards on 14 carries.

It doesn't get any easier for Chattanooga. The Mocs travel to No. 17 Jacksonville State next week, while the Mountaineers host Jacksonville University. UTC-JSU is a 7 p.m., (EDT) kickoff and there is a bus trip planned by the UTC Mocs club. For more information, click here.
