CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga Mocs scored early and often in topping Western Carolina (1-5/0-4) in Southern Conference play on a Homecoming Saturday night at Finley Stadium. UTC (3-4/1-3) put points on the board in the air, on the ground and from both sides of the ball.
Terrell Robinson (South Pittsburg, Tenn.) led the Mocs on a six-play, 75-yard scoring drive to start the game. He ran 32 yards on the first play, at the time the longest run for the Mocs this season. He capped the drive when he found fellow freshman Faysal Shafaat (Orlando, Fla.) on a misdirection play for the 18-yard score.
Robinson engineered drives of 75, 63 and 63 yards in the first quarter alone as UTC jumped out to a 17-0 lead. Ryan Consiglio (Franklin, Tenn.) scored on a 45-yard fumble return before Robinson found Joel Bradford (Chattanooga, Tenn.) from 21 yards out as UTC took a 31-0 lead into intermission.
The Mocs put an exclamation point on the night in the first three plays of the second half. Career sack leader Joshua Williams (Griffin, Ga.) recorded the first of two sacks on the opening play. Chaz Moore (Memphis, Tenn.) followed with his first career interception giving UTC the ball at the Catamounts' 22. J.J. Jackson (Marietta, Ga.) scored on the ensuing play to make it 38-0.
WCU answered with a 52-yard kickoff return to start in prime field position at the UTC 38. On third-and-nine from the Mocs 25, Brandon Pechloff was intercepted by D.J. Key (Centerville, Tenn.) who returned it a school-record 85 yards for the score and a 44-0 advantage which ended in a 51-7 Chattanooga romp.
Robinson had 123 yards on seven of 11 passing with three touchdowns. He added 72 yards on 14 carries before departing late in the third quarter.
Bradford, Shafaat and Ron Moore (Sanford, Fla.) were on the receiving end of the Robinson touchdown tosses. Moore's came at the end of the first quarter from 35 yards out to make it 17-0. It was his third catch of the season in three games, second touchdown.
Marquis Green (Palmetto, Fla.) led all rushers with 93 yards on 16 totes and the Mocs final tally of the game from seven yards out. The 265 rushing yards as a team are the most since 271 at Appalachian State on Oct. 29, 2005.
Consiglio, Key and Wes Dothard (Carrollton, Ga.) led a smothering defensive attack. Consiglio showed the way with nine tackles, as Dothard and Key recorded six and five, respectively. Dothard had three tackles for loss and two pass breakups, while Key had a sack and a pass breakup to go with his pick-six.
As a unit, the Mocs had 11 tackles for loss with five sacks. The defense limited Western to 3.6 yards per play, producing five turnovers (3 interceptions/2 fumble recoveries).
Josh Cockrell had two carries for 42 yards to lead the Catamounts on the ground. Michael Vaughn added 30 yards on nine rushes and WCU's only score. Brandon Pechloff and Zac Brindise combined for 151 yards passing with 77 for Pechloff and 74 for Brindise. The duo completed 20 of 39 with three interceptions.
Rock Williams led the Western Carolina defense with 10 tackles including a sack. WCU had six tackles for loss with two sacks on the night.
Chattanooga hits the road to face Elon at 3 p.m., on the SoCon Sports Network. Fans can watch the game on ESPN3.com and local PBS stations, can access live stats on GoMocs.com and follow @GoMocs for notes and stats on twitter.
