Postgame Quotes
Western Carolina at Chattanooga
Chattanooga, Tenn. - McKenzie Arena
Dec. 19, 2011
Head Coach Wes Moore
Opening Statement:
"It shows you that it's a 40-minute game. We felt pretty good and were on kind of a roll coming into halftime, but in the second half we couldn't make shots. When the other team is doubling your post, you got to be able to make shots and we went 1-13 from the three-point line in the second half and they hit 5-12, which is how they got back in the game. Thank goodness free throws won it for us. In particular, Alex Black going 10-10 down the stretch from the foul line was the difference in the game. It sends a message to our team, we have not arrived yet."
On Alex Black:
"That's why she's in there. We ended up the last minute or so with her and Tenisha (Townsend) both in there because of their ball-handling skills and both are good free throw shooters. It was a situation where we knew they would press, we knew they'd foul and those were the people we needed in the game."
What do you do when the shots won't fall:
"Well you try to rotate some people in and get some different people looks. But then again, at some point, you have to go with the people you feel like have the best percentage to knock 'em down. It's like going with a pinch hitter, there's a bit of a risk. I have confidence our kids can knock down shots."
Is this a lesson learned:
"You're up at halftime 38-24...we had a 16-point lead in the second half, but it doesn't take long to turn it around. Basketball is a game of streaks, especially with the three-point line. A 16-point lead, they hit two or three shots and boom, its single digits and here we go. They kept coming at us, they hit shots and we didn't. Some of those shots we could have done a better job on. We didn't defend the way we teach it and the way we work on it, so we got a little bit out of character. Those are the things we can learn from."
Sophomore Guard Alex Black
10-10 Performance from FT Line & Playing in "Crunch" Time:
"It was one of the first times I've had to be in towards the end of the game. I just tried to be settled and take care of the ball...I was just thinking don't mess up. I'm pretty confident at the line...I just try not to think about the situation when I'm at the line."
Junior Forward Kylie Lambert
What was the difference in the 2nd half when WCU made its run:
"The difference was going 1-13 from behind the arc. We weren't shooting it as well as we were in the first half, but we did a lot of little things to make up for that in the second half. As coach Moore said, 'we did enough to get the win'."
What do you take from winning a close game like this:
"There are a lot of things we can learn from tonight. We learn from what we did wrong allowing them back in the game."
How big was it to pull it out down the stretch when they made their run:
"It was big especially in a conference game."
