Mocs Suffer Disappointing Start at Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic

ATHENS, Ga.---The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team is tied for 22nd after the opening round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic Friday at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Chattanooga shot 311 in the event's unconventional format on a cold, blustery day.
Instead of counting scores at the end of a round, all five team members played together and the top four scores per hole count to the team score. The Mocs started out on No. 4 with a shotgun start.
After four pars started the day at even for Chattanooga, the troubles started. The Mocs played five holes at nine-over par before carding level par on No. 10.
Holes 11 and 12 took a bite of the round as UTC went six over on the two including five bogeys on 11. Marion Duvernay (Publier, France) recorded the first birdie on the par three 13th, while the other four student-athletes each parred with three just missing birdie putts of their own.
But the Mocs could not build momentum. They were plus five over the next four before playing the par five 18th at one under behind birdies by Duvernay and Yushira Budhram (Johannesburg, South Africa). Those were the last birdies of the round as UTC ended the last three holes at five over.
Emma de Groot (Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia) is tied for 42nd overall with the Mocs' low round of 77 (+5). She and Christine Wolf (Igls, Austria) counted every hole today.
Jordan Britt (Dayton, Tenn.) is tied for 59th at six over, 78, while Duvernay is tied for 78th at 79 (+7). Wolf (82) and Budhram (89) round out the scores tied for 102 and 118, respectively.
No. 5 Purdue shot 284 (-4) to take the early team lead by two strokes over No. 2 Alabama in second at 286 (-2). No. 4 Duke and No. 13 Georgia are tied for third at 291 (+3).
Florida State's Hannah Thomson and Aleja Cangrejo of Duke are tied atop the individual leaderboard at two under, 70. Numa Gulyanamitta (Purdue) is third at 71 (-1).
Saturday's second round is a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. The Mocs is the second group teeing off the par 5 18th hole. Live scoring can be followed at GoMocs.com.
