UNCG at Chattanooga
Chattanooga, Tenn. - McKenzie Arena
Jan. 28, 2012
Head Coach Wes Moore
Opening Statement:
"I was pleased with the way we came out. Obviously we had a rough weekend last weekend on the road and thought it was important we get off to a good start, especially in the rebounding area, I thought we were very aggressive crashing the offensive boards and did a pretty good job of keeping them off the glass in the first half. Also, we struggled a little bit against the zone last Saturday so it was good to see us get some looks and knock down some threes. Got Kayla Christopher going. Overall, I thought the first half was really impressive. I know we had about twice as many assists as turnovers. We had eleven offensive boards. Second half, we just maintained and finished the job. It wasn't quite as sharp we would like to be but we were able to get a lot of people and were able to get some of our young kids some valuable experience. Overall, it was a good day and hopefully we can build on it."
On his team's rebounding
"I've always said I felt like rebounding is the most important part of the game. We did not shoot the ball well last weekend, we didn't shoot the ball great today but I always feel like if you can get an extra shot or two and hold them to one shot per possession, even on a bad night you have a chance to win. We're going to have to be tougher. We're going to have to be a little bit more physical and a little bit nastier in there if we're going to survive. There's a lot of teams in this league that have gotten athletic and physical and we're going to have to step up in that area."
On importance of winning comfortably after two straight losses
"We were able to get off to a good start and that was important. I'm not going to make excuses. Everybody goes through stretches but I thought our kids were probably a little fatigued last weekend. I think we had five games in eleven days and three in six days maybe. I think having fresh legs makes a difference but I think also it's an attitude. I think it was important we get back on the court and get a little bit of confidence and feel better about ourselves."
Junior Guard Kayla Christopher
On the win tonight:
"Coming back home off of two losses, it was really important for us today. We came out to rebound the basketball. I think that is the reason we were so successful. The first half we outrebounded them, so that was a good start. I think we fed off of that and got a lot of second chance points."
On getting past the halfway point of the season:
"We're halfway through. This is our start of playing everyone for the second time around. We have six home games left. I think we always play better at home. We wanted to come out tonight that we aren't just going to lay down. We're in this til the end."
Senior Forward Whitney Hood
On the Lady Mocs rebounding advantage:
"We did really well on the rebounding. Obviously the last two games we didn't get that done. So we really focused on that tonight"
