Chattanooga Head Coach Jim Foster
Thoughts on the game
“I just think we weren't aggressive enough. We weren't aggressive in South Bend. But I think we learned a bit about ourselves. We've had some very tough practices and some very demanding practices. I've challenged them and I think they've responded.”
Thoughts on aggressiveness/handling the press
“I just think if you don't turn the ball over, and you have to play defense the way the game is called today, if you're patient you can get great opportunities. I think we did that. So, we took care of the ball, we got it to half court and took advantage of opportunities.”
Thoughts on importance of the first half scoring run
“It's all important. Getting the lead, having them come back and tie the game. Wilting, pulling up your shorts and getting a little bit tougher, getting the loose balls - it's a process. Everybody says they want it, but to earn it you have to work. You just have to get after it on a daily basis. You have to make it who you are. You can't wake up one day and say 'I'm really going to be good today.' You have to try and be good every day. When they learn that, you're unlimited in your potential.”
Thoughts on practicing for the press
“I showed them how easy it was to beat pressure by putting eight people on defense in practice.”
Thoughts on Keiana's block with a minute left
“She's gifted. That's probably the third or fourth time that's happened this year. She's gifted.”
Thoughts on putting together a difficult schedule
“When I made it, people told me I was nuts. And when we started to played it, I was convinced they were right. Nobody in their right mind plays Villanova. Obviously I started the season without a right mind. I think that the players have taken the challenge and responsibility of what we have put in front of them. Now we have to go on the road again and play Monday. It's not getting any easier.”
Keiana Gilbert, guard/forward, freshman
Thoughts on the win
“It was a great experience. You just have to go out there and act like Tennessee is just any other team and play like we usually do. It felt great to win.”
On the block in the last few seconds of the game
“Well, I was the only one who was really near her so I just had to make sure that she didn't score to tie the game and get the lead.”
Destiny Bramblett, forward, senior
Thoughts on the first half
“It was surprising since Ka'Vonne, Jasmine, and even Aryanna, had gotten into some early foul trouble. Then we had some people come off the bench, play pretty well and capitalize on the moment. Going into the half we felt good, but we knew that we had another 20 minutes.”
Comparing tonight's win to the 2012 win at McKenzie Arena
“I think it weighs a lot more just for the simple fact that we didn't have Kylie [Lambert] and Kayla [Christopher] this year, and we lost five seniors last year. The fact that we lost to them at their house by like 23 last year gave us a chip on our shoulders for this game. We had to come back and compete after that."
Alicia Payne, guard, junior
Thoughts on withstanding the run Tennessee gave in the second half
“We just know it's a game of runs. Tennessee is a good team so we knew coming out of half time that they were going to play hard and try to win this game, but we just stayed focused. I think we did a good job. Our coaches made us slow down and just remember to keep playing our type of basketball. It all fell into place.”
On neutralizing the Tennessee press
“We worked on the press a lot yesterday because we knew they were going to try to pressure us and try to get turnovers. They're a good defensive team that causes a lot of turnovers, so we worked on the press a lot yesterday. We just stayed composed and moved the ball. We just did what we practiced and it was effective."
Tennessee Head Coach Holly Warlick
Thoughts on the game
“I thought UTC was on top of its game. I thought our offense affected our defense. Layup-after-layup-after-layup, we decided not to defend anybody. When your offense isn't working, you have to lay your hat on something. We couldn't lay our hat on our defense or our rebounding. We cut the deficit but it was a little too late.”
On why Chattanooga was successful
“I thought they were penetrating because we weren't playing very good defense. They got second chance points and rebounded. Their plan was simple for them and they executed it very well. We couldn't stop them, and when we did we were rotating. We couldn't keep them off the boards. As we were getting easy shots and missing, they were getting easy shots and making them.”
On why Tennessee's press didn't affect Chattanooga
“I thought they controlled the tempo of the game. They didn't take any quick shots. They got deep in the shot clock, and we get a little anxious at times. They were dribbling right past us like we weren't even on the court. They had a great game plan. Hat's off to them. They played an outstanding game. I don't know what Coach Foster's game plan was, but I am sure they followed it to a tee."
Ariel Massengale, point guard, senior
Thoughts on the first half
“I don't think we came out to start the game like we had talked about and how we wanted. We allowed some easy buckets, and we allowed our offense to affect our defense. All the credit to UTC, though. They played hard, ran their offense and did everything the scouting report said they would.”
“It's a new season. It's a new team and new year. Texas is a great team, but I think we've done a great job of scouting them. I don't think we're banking on something like what happened two years ago. I know we have to regroup, refocus and realize what we are capable of doing.”
Jasmine Jones, forward, junior
Thoughts on the Tennessee defense
“The entire team's defense wasn't Lady Vols' defense. We usually hang our hats on defensive rebounding, but Chattanooga played extremely well. We just have to execute.”
