Shootout Ends Mocs Season in SoCon Tournament

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- After battling it out 110 minutes to a 0-0 tie, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and VMI moved on to a shootout. It took seven attempts from each team before the Keydets came out on top 3-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Wednesday night at Finley Stadium.

VMI started the shootout with Liz Nickerson's shot going high. Chattanooga responded with a shot from sophomore McKenzie Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) that found the back of the net to put the Mocs up 1-0.

The first of VMI's next two shots hit the post followed by a save by senior Lauren Thomas (Memphis, Tenn.). Chattanooga's second shot by redshirt junior Hannah Wyatt (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) missed the mark high and senior Skylar Brewer (Farragut, Tenn.) hit a shot low into the net that skipped through bottom and hit the wall behind to put the Mocs up 2-0.

VMI would get made shots from Amy Horney and keeper Darien Dunham to tie it up 2-2 with Dunham making two saves on Chattanooga's next two attempts.

The match moved to sudden victory on shootouts. Thomas made a save to keep Chattanooga's chances alive, but Clare Latham's shot was stopped by Dunham. Demetra Protogyrou's goal made it 3-2 and that would stand as Dunham made her fourth straight save, snaring sophomore Peyton McCollum's (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) shot to secure the victory.

UTC outshot the Keydets 16-10 with nine shots on goal to four. Each team had a chance at a penalty kick in the first half, but neither shot found the net with saves by Thomas and Dunham to keep it scoreless.

McCollum and Gregg each had four shots for the Mocs with two on goal. Freshman Masey Fox () and Latham each had three shots with a pair on goal and Thomas recorded four saves in the contest.

Sydnie Bligh had a game-high five shots with three on goal and Juliet Esnardo made three shots and Dunham had nine saves in the match.

The Mocs end the season at 4-12-3 overall and VMI improves to 6-12-2 and will take on Samford Saturday night in Birmingham, Ala.
